Johnson Outdoors Owns Both Humminbird and LakeMaster. So LakeMaster Mapping is Humminbirds own mapping. Plus coming very very soon LakeMaster is offering Auto Charts from LakeMaster that the user to collect his own Sonar Recordings and Convert in his Computer with no sharing on the cloud or to any one else if he desires and export back to AutoCharts Zero Line Card and have his own custom mapping.

This is a never ending discussion...what is better, Ford or Chevy? My advice is to go out with someone that has one brand, then with another guy with the other and see for yourself. You'll be VERY glad you did. All of us have our biases so just beware of who you listen to. All great people, just biased!

You do not need to buy additional parts in order to have downscan and sidescan in units like the 1199.

Garmin requires the GCV in order to have downscan and sidescan capabilities even in their top of the line GPSMAP 1040xs. It uses an internal antenna, but you can buy an external. It does not have customizable monitor presets.

Actually there are several units that have DownVu built in. But yes, the GCV box is needed for SideVu. Garmin's are by far the easiest to navigate. They are also the most water resistant units on the market with the best screen visability available whether in sun or shade, and with or without sunglasses. As is said, every one has their own preferences and one should always test different units and brands out before buying.

I think Bob is right on this one. I keep vacillating back and forth on what I want as well. What I have found is that in most instances you'll find that people who own Humminbird, like Humminbird. Those that own Lowrance, like Lowrance. Also, remember there are a number of opinions that are based on a person's monetary interests in the product. Nothing wrong with that but, not exactly unbiased. One way to go is ask people who sell both, not totally unbiased as there still may be a financial incentive. The best (and hardest to find) are those who have no financial incentive in any of them and have actually USED multiple manufacturers units.

Right on Big C.
I currently run Lowrance Touch units bow and console but, I'd sure take a long hard look at Garmin if I didn't. I really like what I see!
They do make larger units that have been around a long time primarily used off shore. So they are no strangers to on water useage and of course they own the GPS business for autos, etc. I'd consider them strong contenders and wouldn't be at all surprised to see them own this market in the future.
And the best thing about them entering the fresh water market, they will push both Lowrance and Humminbird to invest in newer technology that will benefit all of us.
