I only use a swivel when spider rigging. You don't lose your whole setup if you hang up and break off. Never use them for jigs or minnows. I fish with braid and a leader and I tried it one time to see if I had less line twists and I didn't notice a difference with or without the swivel.

Swivels if you are using a 'spoon' type jig, or inline spinners to reduce line twist. Jigs no-need...minnows-no need going from braid to mono-no need (there are special knots for this). For jig fishing I use a 'loop knot' so the jig has better action than using a clinch knot. I use that knot, and sometimes I'll use a Eugene knot. For the most part, that's all I ever use.
Fly tier (yeah, I can fly fish...but the fish don't like frothy water!)

Braid to fluoro I tie the Alberto knot unless I'm fishing a double rig then I use a small (#8) swivel to keep down the line twist to a minimum.

I like them with minners for sure no line twist ; just not sure about jigs on a leader Exactly. Agreed.

If I were fishing deep I would try a Carolina rig with a swivel about 20" above the jig. That would make it easier to get that 1/32oz jig down 30+ fow. "thump"

I do not know if it made a difference, but tonight I used about a 9' leader (about 7' before first jig), and seems I caught about the same on the braid, swivel leader vs mono.....just saying...Monday seems it was about 2-1 with only about 6" before the swivel.

This is my opinion, so take it for what it's worth....unless the lure is a spoon that might cut the line, I don't use swivels (and probably wouldn't even then). When I was a kid, we used them so we could change lures quickly. My opinion for a long time has been if you don't have enough confidence in a lure to tie it on, especially when you can tie a palomar knot in 15 seconds (or less), then don't put it on at all.

Im not a swivel user on any account, but dont think it takes away from the bite..... I use to use the crappie rods with a swivel and spinner that looked so gaudy and still caught fish in timber. Now i like using the fast snap gadget that you find in the fly fishing section.

I tried those no knot fast snaps. It cost me several large bass and crappie.
I was using the small size and a large fish would straighten them out while fighting. So I no longer use them.

Don't know why you would use them with jigs.

thanks for the great insite I have used swivels on minnows and on the top jig in the past. It was for ease of use and to keep line twist to a minimum with minnows for my wife.
However since I installed the mercury vapor underwater light I have been able to observe the action of fish as they approach the bait in the light.
I have watched several large bass swim up to a minnow or jig, suspend and watch the minnow or jig for a few minutes, then swim back under cover. I have seen this action with both minnow and jig.
I have watched bluegill and white bass do the same thing. I have never seen crappie approach bait in the light.
So when I return to fishing I am going to try crappie rigs that have metal arms from the swivel, then use a drop leader from the wire arm to the hook. I am also going to down size the hooks I normally used.
I will see if this makes a difference. If it makes a difference in the light pool then it should make an even greater difference in the normal lighting of the lake.

The only reason I use a swivel from time to time is...at night when I run two jigs (I use tube/lead insert) when I am really into alot of bites, my jigs get torn up so instead of retying, I can unhook the lead and put another complete jig on and not waste time. I'm blind at night. All on swivels. Never would a thunk until I saw an old man using them at Navarro Mills once.

I use braid on all my rods with a mono leader and I use a #12 swivel to connect the two lines. It's small enough to go through the guides without hanging up and I don't have to worry about tying a line-to-line knot. I always use a swivel...........
