So, I have never used a low gear ratio reel for deep cranking, but after years of hearing about the benefits of doing so, I broke down and ordered a lew's tournament mg speed spool with the extended handle and the 5:4to1 gear ratio. What do ya'll think of these reels and how has your experience been with them? Do you have any advise for going to a slower retrieve as I am sure it will take a while to get used to it? Are there any user tips about this particular reel that I should keep in mind? I know I could have gone with a higher end reel, but I got a good deal, it got really good reviews and I did not want to be out too much cash if I find that I am unable to adjust to the slower gear ratio.

The MG is a great reel I don't use it for cranking I use the BB1 but have quit a few MG's you will like it.Far as the ratio I don't see were you will have a problem just chunk it and reel it.

I have a couple of Speed Spools which are the next step down. Paired up the the right rod they work well. I don't really have to slow my retrieve down since the gear ratio does it for me. Mine worked out of the box pretty well with just a few adjustments and no backlashes.

Sounds like I should be pretty satisfied with my choice. Thanks for the feedback folks.

I got one of the 5:4:1 Lew's Tourney pro series when Tackle Warehouse had them on sale and it has worked well for deep cranking.
