So you don't think it was let go? Where do you think it came from? I can't imagine they can just cross 100 miles of land to find a lake.
I actually like the thought of having a few dozen around the lake, maybe it will keep the jet skis and wakeboarders too scared to come out. We have rivers that flow through Texas all the way to the GOM. Why is it so hard for folks to believe that gators are native from the southern and northern borders of Texas? I can assure you there are gators on South Texas ranches that came from those rivers and creeks during floods. Not pets that were released or purchased to control turtles. Ranchers don't want something in their ponds that kills livestock. I know you are smarter than me but have you ever been to Canyon Lake? That gator would have to come up through 4 other lakes and dams before it crawled up over the mountain of Canyon lake dam. Not to mention the water below Canyon is very cold (bottom draw lake). Now it could have come down the Guadalupe but due to low water parts of the river don't even run anymore. If there is a gator and I don't doubt there is/could be then it was let go. This area is way to populated for a gator to just be wandering around unnoticed for this long. Gators in Coleto creek, Choke, Mathis? Absolutely but not going be allowed at Canyon, it's way too populated. I agree, Canyon is way too civilized meaning with all the camps and tubers upstream, not to mention low water levels, and with most of the resident riverfront property owners a gator wouldn't stand a chance. Another sign the gator is out of it's element is when it starts taking up residence on boat ramps. That is the abosolute worst place a gator can hang out if it expects to survive. My guess is the gator isn't from an established population, but it was dumped there! Maybe someone who doesn't like jet ski's or water skiers!

MCO?...I thought this was about Canyon Lake! Nobody disputes the fact that he saw an alligator, but the fact is they aren't well established in the lake and haven't been seen for many years. If there is an alligator that set up residence at one of the highly used ramps it will soon be dealt with. Just too many kids and people with pets live around that lake to put up with it. Don't let the Peta types that live there know about it or they'll close the ramp so that the gator is protected. Here is an answer about gators and Canyon lake on the Corps of Engineers Q&A sight. Look at #11. http://www.swf-wc.usace.army.mil/canyon/faq.asp#1one

After I found the old dead thread I remembered reading it. I guess my mind is going faster than I thought! This is Canyon Lake we are talking about so I still think if one hangs around a busy boat ramp too long it's going to mysteriously vanish!

I've seen gators in private ranch lakes as far south as Webb County. Don't think for minute there aren't gators in most of Texas' rivers and streams. Suspect the ones I've seen originated in the Nueces watershed. Yep, I was heading south on Hwy 16 going to Falcon several years ago and I spotted something crossing the road up in front of me. When I got there I realized it was a 6 or 7 foot gator. Darn thing was out in the middle of the desert. I guess it was moving from one pond over to another.
