I agree with whitetail, need grass and bait fish. TPWD will not stock perch or crappie but want let a group buy and stock them. They can be bought from fish farms so go figure. The water from the last rise from Mexico looked terrible according to the locals.

So are a large number of crayfish along with the perch.
IMO; For the last 15 plus years, the bulk of Amistad fish have lived in the grass.. Yes there were more factors involved with the demise of the fish population. However I feel when the lake dropped and the grass died. Those(grass)fish lost there home, there ambush point and the magnet that drew all of there prey to them. Some were lucky enough to be in a part of the lake that still had some old timber. The rest either learned to live like a striper or sand bass--or they simply starved.. violin

After seeing a lot of skinny fish and the numbers dropping way off... Some of us were claiming over a year ago that the fishery was in trouble. That was even before hearing reports of tainted water coming in. scared

We just can't seem to escape these cold fronts. Another gonna hit tomorrow. Gonna be a really late spawn I guess this yr. Was hoping would warm up enought this week for Champs. Hopefully can get a string of warm weather just prior to Top 6 next week.

If we can keep a relatively stable water level this summer the grass will explode and we wil be in good shape.

thumb True; but it will take several years of good conditions to get the numbers back to where they were prior to the record low. And a couple more to see the numbers of big fish we had at one time.

One good thing for the fish.. But horrible for the local economy.. Is the fact that when fishing gets this tough the angling pressure will be much less as fishermen will go elsewhere.

We fished a half day sat til the rain came in, saw a lot of grass pods with a good start. Had several 2 to 3 lbs fish.

This is the second time I've heard of "contaminated" water coming into the lake from the Mexican floods. Any truth to this? Anyone got any pics?

There is a good article in Texas Fish & Game about drought conditions. The general consensus is that when the water comes back up at a lot these places the fishing is going to be spectacular.

I spoke with a couple who retired and moved to Del Rio. They used to fish with us. As told to me; one report of noticing a slick or film on the water on the Mex. side..At first they thought they were losing some type of petroleum product from there boat. Then noticed there was a film on the water that was bad enough that every time he would hit the trolling motor it would disturb it enough to clear up then cover back over. Said it was bad enough it left a ring all around the boat at the waterline that had to be scrubbed off. Plus he could find no evidence of anything leaking from his boat.
Also as far as I know Mexico does not regulate the use of pesticides and herbicides or much any chemicals like we do...So there is no telling what could be washed down stream..

Talked to different people that said up the rio the water was real gray looking and like fireman said there is no control on chemicals over there. 90% of the water comes down the Rio Conchos river and they are no industrial plants up there but they is a lot of mining, and you never know what they use in their operations.

The mining angle is what I have been hearing some.

I fished it 3 days this past weekend. I personally think the fishing will get dramatically better in the next two or three weeks. We caught good numbers every day, just not the right size. And our tournament had multiple 15 lb sacks on Saturday. It's getting better.

Within the next 60 days will be as good as it will get for this year.

Damn Mexican farmers, no but seriously TPWD does need to look into what is causing the lack of fish at Amistad.
