Looking to do some primitive kayak camping but I would like to camp along a lake. I don't have to worry about shuttling vehicles or water levels. I would like to stay within 200 miles of DFW. Any suggestions.

Look up purtis creek . It is about 1.5 hrs east of Dallas. You are in the park but kayak or canoe across lake to primitive sites. Good fishing off the stumps. I am sure the lake will be down a bit but all of them are. Maybe call the park office before going for questions. I went a few years back and was fun. JP.

For real primitive camping, do a river trip. The Red River is fun, about an hour north of Dallas. Will need to do some research but there's nothing more fun than camping with only the gear you can fit in your kayak.

Alternatively, paddling your gear out to the islands on Texoma (from Highport Marina) can be a lot of fun. Striper fishing in your "front yard" and nobody will mess with you on an island. Nice beaches on most of them too if you have a wife and/or kids.

Purtis Creek water level is FULL. We are camped here all week and yesterday I walked the primitive camping loop to check it out. It's not a wilderness river trip but remote and LOTS of fishing spots. Site M is the largest site is you have a group.

I've been thinking about doing this exact thing. Camping on the islands of Texoma. Anyone know if a permit is required?

Nope. I've done it about 5 times. Easy paddle, too, just be careful because you do cross a boat lane and Highport can be very busy. I like the island that's straight out and slightly left. Treasure Island maybe? I always get them mixed up. Good camping area there, plenty of fire wood, and nice "sandy" beaches.

If you decide to camp there again and wouldn't mind company give me a shout.

If Treasure island is the one in the left, it has an old Indian burial ground on it. You can see it's been fenced in to keep vandals out. I've also seen as many as 20 deer out on that island as well.

Needless to say, with the Indian burial ground a coupled with the deer, you wouldn't be alone out there smile

I definitely need to try this Texoma trip. How much is the TX/OK fishing license?

You probably realize it, but the $12 card is not a Tx/Ok license. It's only valid for Texoma, and you need an OK Non-Resident license for the Red River, if you plan a trip there. I just but the NR since I fish other parts of OK waters, especially the RED!

Will do. I might this summer... late April or May perhaps. We'll see.

+1 purtis creek

It's not super remote but you can kayak in and there are fire rings.
