They also last better than shiners! I would buy them before shiners any day! If I could get them in summer I sure would get them.

Ya know Skip48, I forgot to empty my minnow bucket yesterday and the few rosie reds I had left were still alive this morning. The price was the same for the reds as the shiners.

Rosies are not the same as red horse minnows. I prefer a rosy red minnow, but I only use them if I can get the bigger ones. They are more expensive than a shiner per pound, but u get rough 16-18 dozen per pound rather than 10-12 dozen shiners, so they can end up being cheaper. I think the bigger ones are better and they are tougher than a regular shiner.

one thing for sure about the rosy reds, I don't think you can kill them if you stepped on them... I accidently left some in the bucket this winter and the water froze except for the last inch at the bottom of the bucket, they were still swimming!

Red Horse or Red Shiner / Red Finned Shiner: That's it exactly. Haven't seen one of those for years. Sure wish they were sold somewhere. Dad always seined ours out of the Trinity River drainage areas. If someone could make a jig to imitate this, I bet it would be a winner.

Rosy Reds Red Horse or Red Shiner / Red Finned Shiner: I've never seen either one of these before. I wished I knew somewhere close where you could buy minnows by the pound. It would beat the price the marina charges by the dozen. My wife uses a lot of minnows, as she believes in keeping them "fresh". So if she had not received a bite in ten or fifteen minutes she will check the minnows to see if they are still lively. If they don't move to suit her, she replaces them. She uses two rods, two hooks per rod, so she can use a lot of minnows in an hour. Sure wish I could convince her to try jigs. But she doesn't complain about the "toys" I buy for fishing so I won't complain about the amount of minnows she uses. Or at least I won't complain where she can hear it or read it.

They last longer in summer too, plus I think you gat more bites. Know a guy that was out fishing, saw a guy in a pontoon pull up to a spot others had fished and he started catching crappie. From what I was told a lot of them. They ask him what he was using from a distance and didn't hear well so they went and got some shiners. The next day they fished the same spot the guy did so well in, but didn't do anything so moved. Then he saw the same guy pull up in his pontoon at the same spot and started catching crappie like crazy again. So they got closer to talk to him and that is when they found out his minnows were not shiners, but were Rosy Reds and the guy said the Rosy Reds would out fish the shiners by a lot. I was not there so can not say how much truth is in this, but I did go to Arkansas a couple years back and had a guide that brought Rosy Reds, my first time to see them and we did really well. Had our limit by lunch.
Now also realize the Rosy Reds don't all come as dark of color asa the one in this picture above, but they are for sure different. Most don't get that nice dark Orange and if you Google Rosy Red Minnows you can see a wide range of colors/shades they come in.
I have been trying to find a way to get some here without it costing me a arm and a leg.

Have you ever been shelling peas and shoot one across the porch? Well if you squeeze a Rosie Red while trying to hook it expect the same. I was having to pin the little boogers to the deck and then hook em. I may try em again tomorrow if the wife ain't looking.

You need to get a large plastic tank and a aerator to keep your minnows in. You can buy them by the pound at Fisherman Supply of I-30. During the spring and summer I keep my minnows in a 20 gal plastic tank. Whatever I don't use goes right back into the tank when I get home. It saves alot of time and money. Reggie

Reggie How much are they per pound? It would be a two hour drive but might be worth it by buying several pounds at a time.
