My 997 has started locking up and doing goofy stuff. It never did this prior to a unit repair I had done in December. I shipped the unit off for warranty work on Monday but now I'm curious.
What batteries do you run Mark? I wonder if today's electrons are just too much for a single battery plus being a starting battery.
My unit locked completely up on the initial run on Saturday and about 8 more times during the day. Even when I had the big motor running it would lock up.
My cranking battery is well over specs and the trolling are more than enough. They are Continentals and honestly are older though and need to be changed anyway. My boat gets plugged in as soon as I get it home but I just think they are about wore out. Gonna put a new set in today on my way to the lake.

Since all of you guys are having a similar problem, sounds to me like you are overcharging your batteries. Marine batteries are made for deep cycling yes, but even trickle chargers don't ever cycle off. I use to use a timer on my charger.. 10hr max.. then off for 14hr. Car batteries aren't charged constantly, no reason that a boat battery should be either. just sayin.

the new smart chargers will not overcharge the batteries.

Battery needs replacing. I trust the boat/engine manufacturer to reccomend and install the correct onboard charger that I need since they have been building boats for over 40yrs. This is first issue like this I had out of a ton of boats.

You really want to direct wire these units and not go through the harness. I went through all this with my 1198. Bricked it doing a firmware upgrade, got low voltage alarms with brand new batteries, etc. Optima blue top group 31 with direct wires has worked well for ~1 year since install.

I agree, same issues with 958. Ran a dedicated wire stray to the battery no more problems!!!

My Lowrance shuts off at 11.5 vdc. A weak battery, even fully charged, will shut it off when stsrting the outboard. A good sign to replace the starting battery.
