Confused. Is this post from years before reserve fishing was released? I made the program well before I was aware of ReserveFishing.

Can you choose whether you want a guide that uses a ladder or is just really tall ?

I don't think the feedback rating you refer to is nearly as important as personally talking to the guide. A rating given by an anonymous person is of limited value. The idea that info on what to bring and where to meet that is give at the time of booking is sufficient is not what I would expect. I personally would want up to date info a couple of days before the planned trip. Conditions change constantly. You may need to bring different tackle or lures that what you had planned a couple of weeks ago or a month ago. Because of changing conditions the guide may want to launch from a different part of the lake than originally planned. These types of communications are just too important. Why would you bring tackle and lures if you're going out with a guide? You will still talk to the guide before the trip, just not have to go through the hassle of finding who is available and who isn't. And you can still call around to see who the best fit is. I think Richie is just talking about referrals and giving the guides a place to put an up-to-date calendar. I personally wish more guides had an online calendar and a way to book online.

I always bring my own tackle. Sometimes my own lures also. I know what I can do with my tackle and how it handles. Having a place to put an up to date calendar is great (as long as it is maintained up to date).

They are out on the lake working very hard for some very long hours, and maybe don't have time or feel like keeping a calendar updated daily. If I understand how the fishingguidenow calendar works, the calendar will update automatically when you book through the website, but the guide is responsible for adding the trips he gets through other avenues.

When customers call me, AFTER I ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS THEY MAY HAVE, I instruct them on where to go to get to my calendar and book online.
I could put them in on my end, but I prefer that the customer enter his own information so I get the correct email and phone number.
It is very seldom that a customer calls me and isn't in front of the computer (that's usually where they got the number to call).

If I called you and you sent me to an online booking calendar I would just hang up and find another guide. I guess us old guys are just to old school for the new computer age. If I am going to be dealing with a guide I want to talk to him before I commit my hard earned money. I want all my questions answered before I pay. I guess I have been burned too many times in my life to not get all my questions answered before purchasing.

Truthfully, if someone has a conversation with me and isn't willing to click a button and enter their email and phone number, I really don't want to fish with that person. My clients pay for my time and I don't want to be on the phone while I'm on the water. I don't even have a text plan because of that.
I may lose some business to guides who are more eager to hook a client. But I only want clients who want to fish with me.

Guys I would like to clarify a few thing about ReserveFishing.com. They are very much alive and well and currently in the process of getting prepared to release a lot of changes to their program. Everyone will be seeing a lot of new things from them in upcoming months. They were able to successfully launch an incredible partnership with the World Fishing Network ( http://www.worldfishingnetwork.com/travel/fishing-guides ) that has triggered a lot of buzz in the industry as well catapulted their new partnership list with other companies. They also are trying to work thru their entire guide network and get all the guides a featured article on the WFN website for free ( http://www.worldfishingnetwork.com/fishing-guides/ )be names soon that will be hard to rival. They have a huge announcement coming with one of the largest outdoor organizations in the US that will be awesome, it will potentially give a guide the ability to market for free on over 4400 websites. Personally, I signed up with them when they first started and it took some time to generate some trips but now I do get them. The one thing I can say is that they never promised trips but that they would market me and so far so good. The partnership list they have now is great and growing every day. I was a little confused about the calendar comment as they do have a calendar system inside the guide login section and you can even put a book now button on your own website to show your personal calendar. Ultimately it is the guides responsibility to keep that calendar up to date. We all know the challenge of that being on the water all day and not wanting to go back and do it.. Great news is the new guide phone app will be out very soon and it will be easy to do. This will also give your availability to all the partners website around the world.. Pretty cool.. You should give them a call and have them explain all this is going on.. Plus it is free to sign up for now and if they dont book you a trip you dont pay a dime, plus you will get the advertising on other sites for free

You are offering a service for hire being a guide. That service should include answering all your clients questions before he has to pay. Personal service is part of that as I see it. That is why I would rather buy my tackle at places like Anglers Pro Tackle rather than Bass Pro Shop. I personally don't believe all I am paying for is a guide to show me where to cast, but am paying for a complete experience of a days fishing with someone I can enjoy the day with and a website will not give me any insight as to who I am fishing with. A phone conversation will not tell me all either, but I feel more comfortable after having talked to someone for a short period of time than I am by pushing a few buttons on a computer. I have a list of concerns that is never going to be addressed on a website that a conversation will address. If a guide is not willing to take the effort to write down my information, then why should I expect him to take the effort to show me a good time on the water. No offense meant but am just telling you my way of looking at things.

I think I left out an important statement that may clarify things. Note the edit in capital letters to my earlier post.
I don't expect any client to book a trip without speaking to the guide first - either by email or phone. Once you've browsed the guide's website and spoken to the guide, what's the problem with seeing his available dates and putting your information in the database?

A referral fee for a trip is nothing new, it happens on a regular basis at Fork between alot of the guides. If you are unable to book every day during the prime season on your own then a referral fee is just a cost of business just like fuel, insurance, boat payment. Not a big deal and certainly not keeping guides from using his service.

Confused. Is this post from years before reserve fishing was released? I made the program well before ReserveFishing. Reserve fishing used the same idea and they have (or had) a staff of enthusiastic people to get guides listed and a budget to spend advertising dollars. But they didn't make an interface for the guides to take off their unavailable days. So, the program just assumes that guides are available every day. Funny thing, I just went to www.reservefishing.com and chose freshwater fishing, Texas, Lake Fork, noodling for shark on March 15, 2014 Aocording to their site, there are 8 guides available to noodle for shark on Lake Fork March 15. Of course, I doubt any of those guides will be available on that day. My name is listed there and I know I'm not available. Funny when I have date already booked or blacked out in the system I do not show up! Also when I tried to book a trip for Shark on Fork by noodling I got zero results for the same day you listed. I also looked to see who was available for large mouth that day and all I saw was 5 listed.
