Looking to buy an 899ci, but hearing about not being able to read correct depth when on plane unless you buy a different transducer and cable for a shoot thru the hull application. Can the transducer for getting the depth reading be epoxied in the hull? I would like to get the 899 to get the side imaging but it is starting to sound like the unit won't get a good depth reading without having to buy a bunch of extras, anybody know if this is right or does the package work as is?

A properly installed transom transducer works fine, but some hulls are not suitable for good high speed depth readings with a transom transducer, especially one that is not very hydrodynamic like the large Side Imaging transducers.
Not only that, the Side Imaging transducers are expensive and most prefer not to expose it to possible impact damage by having it just below the hull bottom so it can give high speed depth readings.
The typical installation for a high performance fiberglass hull is a shoot-thru 2D transducer and the Side Imaging transducer attached above the hull bottom.
To do that installation, it takes the XP 9 20 transducer for shoot-thru (epoxy in the hull) and the AS SIDB Y cable to connect it and the Side Imaging transducer to the display.

Bought the 899ci,bought the shoot thru transducer and cable to connect the transducer and the side imaging to the display. Problem now is that the transom on my boat is not a straight across design, the right and left side of the hull extend about 5 inches beyond the actual transom plus the hull is a step design. The only place I can see to mount the side imaging transducer that will get it mounted so that the beam can shoot left and right and without interference from the lower unit is right in front of the lower unit in between the live well pickups and above the drain. Since all the transducer is going to be used for is side and down imaging at idle speed, would this make a difference? It won't be below the bottom of the hull but definitely be in the water at all times. Any other ideas would be appreciated

Take it at the level of the hull drain and far enough away to see most of the transom. Wayne for everybody else (myself included), where do you think the best place is? By the temp probe???? That's a different looking transom thats for sure.

I would def check out the guys at transducer shield and saver if I were you, those transducer are expensive and this guys give you mounting options on the jackplate as well as peace of mind that it is bullet proof
