I would say focus energy on those netting game fish with nets during spawn and leave the bait gatherers alone. --cut--.... I would strongly suggest that anybody caught doing this be turned into the game wardens immediately.

I think you should talk to the biologist of each lake. And they will probably tell you that there is no way to kill off the population of baitfish with nets. Shad spawn by the millions. And if you did not know most fish are cannibalistic and will eat the small fry, so minnows and shad isn't there only food source. Reducing the daily bag limit and raising the minimum length limit will surely produce bigger fish in the long run. Johnson, i thought that you are on my side. Lol.

This forum is always good for a laugh! if you went out of your way to catch shad in nets it would not be possible.

I know that we have plenty bait fish in our lake, catching shads with net will not put a dent on its population. I wish that this abundance of bait fish will last for ever.
Few years back, when the zebra mussel first started spraying in lake Texomo, the shads population took huge hit due to lack of food. The stripers i caught along the shore line by the Dam were scary skinny, bony. That year, lots, lots stripers, including big ones, 20#, 25# were starving to death.
Last spring, i noticed that shads were not as thick and abundant as previous years, and fishmen that i talked to, complain that they were not able to net any shads. Later on before summer, thousands big sandbass and Hybrids were dead along shore line.
This winter, i also notice that shads are very hard to find in couple of creeks where i fish for crappies. Even at WRC, fishmen cried not being able to locate shads. If you have time, go to WRC, you will see first hand how many fishmen there throwing nets to catch shads, cooler full of shads. I am not saying that they did anything illegal. But i really wonder how long this abundance of bait fish is going to last.

The shad populations are boom and bust like anything else, they come in waves. I'm guessing the dead striper had nothing to do with the shad, or it was a coincidence, and what killed the shad killed the striper. Striper will find stuff to eat if shad populations are down, there are still other baitfish to eat.The same year the zebra mussels hit was the same time texoma had a massive shad kill due to a very cold winter. It's cold and shad are hard to catch, this doesn't mean they aren't there. Not to mention doing that would put striper guides out of business plus some people can't afford to buy bait every time they fish.
