I've read every post in this thread. I'm not a biologist. 250 some odd lunkers have been taken out of this lake, and some of them have been returned after TPWD verified their gene. Biologists are learning something from this program. AS far as being detrimental to Lake Fork, I don't see it, as a fish of this age has probably spawned for several years. Now, on the other hand, there's quite a few fish that are killed simply by being dragged around to weigh-in from the weekly tournaments. Most of these fish are young, and under 16 inches. I know four things. A dead 16 inch fish won't spawn, or get to 13 lbs, and biologist won't learn anything from this dead, 16 inch fish, and that fish will never spawn again But, again, I'm not an expert, and it seems we have several on this forum so I'll just leave it at that. I agree. They wont reach 10lbs if they cant survive 16" There are a lot of 14-16 inch fish that die from the tournaments. Probably more than we realize or want to admit. Is this not the way TPWD has Lake Fork set up? Fish under 16" should be harvested to the benefit of the greater good of the overall fishery? Not exactly. 14-16 inch fish CAN be harvested, not SHOULD be harvested. This just means that the lake can sustain with these fish being harvested, above and below the slot. There was a time when biologists were begging fishermen to harvest more under-slot fish, but catch-and-release mentality all but made this a sin. Lake Fork is in a different stage in it's life currently, and losing the number of under-slot fish now, is much more detrimental than the few SAL fish that are taken, even if the SAL fish dies. Our perception and mentality makes killing a trophy fish much, much worse than killing a small fish. A dead fish is a dead fish, and I hate it either way, but if we kill a fish, it doesn't make us a sinner.

Glad that Mr. McCarty posted though.....he's been there a long time and though he probably doesn't know me we have mutual acquaintances. Just in case my posts are mis-interpreted, I'm in no way anti-tournament. Heck, I've fished some. Let's be clear on one thing, fishing kills fish. Hook mortality is the number one fish killer, and simply because I've been doing this so long, I've probably killed more than most. Where I'm confused, is that there is only one Lake Fork, and with 200+ other lakes in Texas, I often wonder why anglers would choose to fish tournaments here, where they compete to catch the 5 biggest little fish.? TPWD created the best trophy bass fishery ever, ( in Texas) and currently, the tournament guys come here to fish, again to catch the little ones, and in doing so, are in no way protecting this resource, that has been a State treasure since '86. This lake is special, and in my simple mind, should be treated special. I hold no ill will towards any angler, since fishing is an individual sport, with individual goals, but I still am awed by what Lake Fork has been, and how we as anglers have abused it.
