With the small spools I just leave it in the box and feed the line out one of the corners of the opening. The weight of the spool and box puts enough tension I have found. I leave the big spools in the box but have to keep the lid open. Not as much tension that way though. I never seem to have anyone around when I need to string a reel.

tryed the pencil thing, couldn't get it to work right for me. so i took a hanger and bent it every which way around my feet through the spool, and then close it off. i just flex my feet to loosen up on it and squeeze the toes to tighten it. but i always do it by myself.

Bought the Berkley spooling station a couple of years ago. Before that it was a pencil, screwdriver or whatever I could find. I have just left them in the packaging too.

I mounted my Line Tamer on a piece of a forklift carriage, it doesn't even budge an inch and you can adjust the line tension to make sure the line is going on the reel under tension and not loose so it wont birds nest as easily.

screw driver in vice, leave it in the box and hold it with my feet or wedge it in chair or boat seat whatever it takes to get it done. Leaving it in the box works pretty good for the most part.

Thanks, Billy

The $25 bucks for the Berkley spooling station is well worth it. I got one a few years ago and I use it all the time.

I have never used one of the 1000 yard spools of line though. If it will hold the 1000 yard spool, it's well worth the money to get one. Plus it comes with a sweet line stripper that takes all the old line off the reel very quickly. Usually Academy will put them on sale in the spring and you can pick one up for $20.

This is what I use and yes it will hold the 1000 yard spools just fine

I use the Berkley spooling station and love it, I did the pencil thing for years. For line removal I use my Dewalt cordless since I misplaced my line stripper, works like a champ!
