ketchen try setting your bottom color setting to " bottom black".
COMING SOON! .. THE STICKLE HOOK " the stay level sickle hook". sits level in the water with all knots.! Provides better hook sets and more natural jigging motion. No more adjusting the knot, gluing , or tying loop knots that cause the hook point to tangle in the loop, or worse knick the line.. The jighook that will make all others obsolete !

I have the HB 596 up front and the 898C HD, SI at the console.
Your had held can't be more accurate than this 898. It is spot on, if you know how to mark it correctly.
also another reason to have a handheld is to mark spots you find in low water conditions you can lean over it as you pass by, as close as you can, and hit mark waypoint, then when the water comes back up, you can remark it on your 898. or just input the coordinates into your 898 by hand.

Hey Kieth, Great graph pics. I consider RC my favorite. Excuse my ignorance, but what are your referring to when you say "NM"? Thanks!

have u ever tried a handheld to fins pinpoint spots, handhelds are a lot better than sonar/gps units. A garmin rino 120 will put you on the spot, on the spots. once your in the general area, kill the big moter, hop on the trolling motor, and truck on up to your big fish tree with that handheld. I think, I'll check this idea out instead of spending a great deal more $$ for a new unit! Thanks
Probing brush for crappie is my game!

I have an 898si on the bow and stern and still sometimes use the handheld. It just seems more accurate, I guess because thats all it does. you can literally count down the feet, 30, 20, 10, bingo there it is. the garmin rino 120 has alot of other cool info also like best fishing times, solunar tables, ect. lots of good handhelds out there, and craigslist usually has several for a good price. In hindsight, I would likely get one without the 2 way radio feature, because I dont use it and it uses alot of juice.(battery). I have to turn the radio off everytime I turn it on.

BREAM BEDS ON LAKE BELTON. U can see the bream scattered abt on the bottom right of the pic. Before driving over them several times, they were sitting in the beds.

I've noticed those holes, or depressions, in the bottom of the lake bed in Purtis Creek. They covered the deeper part of the lake between the timber and the concrete drain structure near the dam. I figured they were old beds used by some sort of fish. It was pretty deep though. 15-20 ft of water. Does anyone have any idea what sort of fish would build beds like this in deeper water? I thought crappie spawned in the shallows.

the research ive done says that bream can bed until late summer , early fall, at various depths, and I cant think of another species of fish that make beds of this type, so I am pretty sure its bream. next year I will set up on them with some slip cork rigs and see what gives, should be a blast. Also crappie , especially white crappie dont always spawn shallow. If the water is real clear, they wont spawn shallow. 12 to 15 is not unusual.

Winter time crappie. Had a hard time catching any until Keyboard (thanks Larry) gave me some tips on boating a few. Spider rigging with half a minnow was the ticket.
