Have you ever used cut shad? Works great on the Guadalupe River.

Laker One,i have tried shad while fishing the S.A. River with not very much success. What we do from time to time is bring home shad from Cally or Braunig & freeze it in separate little bags for each outing. The gars like it though.......On the 2 lakes it works, have even caught Reds & Hybrids on it.The liver can be a little messy but, thats just part of fishing.

I have caught many big blue cats on that river in Floresville and Falls City. We would go to Caleveras and catch shad and bluegill then Use them on the river. You are correct about the far enjoying the shad, but never seemed to bother the blue gill. Biggest. Blue I caught was just over 17. Caught him in about 5ft of water.
Great catch!!

JJ4MEL,there are some good sized blues in that river for sure, ive seen and caught them.Alot of people who catch fish of that size will keep em(to each there own)i release bigger fish to keep the genetics in the water.Gars will play with that shad allday long in the river, didnt do so well with the cats.I dont give up on it though,i always like to have a variety of baits.Banker, thought i saw a pic of you holding a nice blue on another site, was looking into some dead red spray & thinking about trying it.

Certain bodies of water the fish do have their natural baits that would be number #1. You have that SA river dialed in and would probably know the "go to baits"!
