From my personal experience, go to Amistad in March.

I live in San Antonio and fish both through out the year. Falcon is absolutely the lake of choice. Another thing Amistad has been off some what the last six months or so. While Falcon has not been what it was the past 4 years it is still the best chance at that fish of a life time and numbers of good fish. 30lb plus five fish limits are still common on Falcon and rare to impossible on Amistad.

The end of March on Amistad could be good with fish still on some beds.If the lake level remains steady I think it will be real good.

I just signed up to the forum for this one post... I have some experience down at Falcon. I know and fish with several people who get to go down there for months at a time. This is my opinion, but think I'm right on when I give you not only my perception but several others as well...If you want see some nice fish caught go with Tommy Law. He will catch some hawgs, and might even let you take some picture holding them for him. If you want to go out with a nice guy and have pleasant conversation, Jay is your man. If you want a legit shot at catching a DD bass go with Nathan Fields. Another good choice is Robert Amaya, from Robert's tackle shop, but Nathan is the man. We were down there this past Febuary with a large group and everybody went out with a different guide. We thankfully got Nathan for our guide this year and it was the best trip yet. We had (3) over 10 lbs with 11-2 my largest. We caught around 35 fish that day with a handful over 7 and the rest between 3-5 lbs. The other boats on the same lake, on the same day, with the other's mentioned did not catch a single fish over 7 lbs and only managed around 10 fish per boat. Is it luck? sure maybe some, but Nathan can flat out put you on fish, and will actually try to explain his electronics and why we are fishing the spots. Again, this is my opinion, and your money wasted on a clown if you choose Jay, and a water hog if you choose Tommy. check Nathan out lakefalconfishingguide.com

Wow fishingwheelz, I don't know which Jay Grieshaw you fished with but the one I fished with was nothing but professional, and busted his butt to put us on fish.
Life is short. Do what you like, like what you do.

I don't know who you are and I really don't care, but you did not do Nathan Fields any favors with that post. Nathan tried his hand at guiding here on Falcon with an older gentleman last year and they made it until June I believe before moving on. I have never talked to Nathan, but had more than one "conversation" with his partner from last year. I wish everyone success on this lake and that includes Nathan(if he tries his hand again) as I know peoples livelihoods are on the line and depend on it. Take care, Jay

Wow, all I can say is if you go to falcon spend your money on one of the guys that actually live there. Not a part timer from another lake or region. If you do a little research you will find out real quick the guys people tend to hire. There are 4-5 guys that can put you on serious fish.

I'd spend my money with Bassin Billy at Falcon. Check out his fish from yesterday...

I guide on both lakes, Amistad & Falcon. I currently relocated to Falcon from Amistad. On occasion, Amistad guides travel to Falcon (myself and others have done for years) yet Ive never seen Falcon guides go to Amistad. That says a lot about Falcon. Amistad is a fun lake and it once rivaled Falcon but has fallen short the past couple years. Falcon is unique and it stands alone regarding numbers of quality fish however you have to find the concentrations or you could have a slow day. But even then it only takes one cast to catch the fish of a lifetime. Over the past 6 months on Amistad a 5 fish tournament winning weight would be 14-15lbs. Last Spring during prime time 20lbs was huge. Falcon is double that 90% of the year. One factor which you cant control is Mother Nature - you do have more places to hide and fish from the wind on Amistad. Both can be fun in March but if youre on Falcon and your buddy is on Amistad at the same time, he will probably hate you when you get home. Best of luck!
