This is what TPW has on the subject.
How to measure fish:
Place the fish on its side with the jaw closed.
For soft-tailed fish, squeeze the tail fin together to obtain the maximum overall length.
Catch and release into the grease!

oh and is trimming a inch or so off the tail ok LOL TPW has a section on modifying a fish for a tourney, but they didn't talk about trimming the tail (specifically) LOL !!! Sounds like a solid plan though.

Question: How is the proper way t measure blue catfish we need to address his issue now before it comes up at the weigh in... Suggestion: Give everyone 3 fish 10 lbs each and we all simply bring our biggest 2 fish to the weigh in , in my opinion it would make things much simpler because if not you will have to measure every fish that crosses the scales larger then 8 lbs.   1st fish 10 lbs 2nd fish 10 lbs 3 fish 10 lbs 4th = 34 5th = 50 Grand total = 114 lbs If we do this , Team Hurricane finaly has a chance to weigh - in more than 30 LBS  LOL
