1-2' chop on the roughest of days. I work offshore so i see rough weather pretty frequently and i can tell you that although it gets VERY choppy on Texoma, the waves are never more than about 2' on the roughest days, but the chop will pound you to death! I wouldn't go out on a rough day in anything smaller than 20' 1' -2' chop on the roughest of days? Obviously you haven't rounded Preston point heading west when there is a 20-30 mph SW breeze. I have and couldn't see over the next wave ahead of me. At least six foot rollers and I know it gets worse than that. The lake is not open ocean... the river / cliffs act as a funnel. Sorry man. Theres no way, and yes i have. I work on supply boats in the gulf of mexico and knowing the height of the seas is part of my job. I've seen it pretty bad on texoma but there aint never any 6' rollers. Like i said it gets Extremely choppy and i wouldn't doubt there are occasionally 3' waves but i highly, highly doubt it ever gets waves bigger than that. Not trying to be rude, just stating my educated opinion. Now Those are 6' rollers We have two lakehomes on Texoma on the main span (sunset). I've seen a wave wall built for the ocean snap like a twig on more than one occasion. I've knocked bulkheads loose on a boat built and designed in Miami for 6ft seas at 60+mph (28 Apache). I've seen a 24ft cabin boat get pushed completely out of water....... we had to turn it around to pull it out. Even the coast guard will tell you it gets to 3-4ft officially.....and for someone who doesn't have the technical experience to accurately measure a wave they will easily appear to be 6ft. So now the only question is..........who wants to hold the measuring tape. I'll drive. Not it! I hear you, i live on texoma myself. As you said someone without the technical experience could easily see a 3-4' wave and believe its 6'. Personally, i havent seen anything above 2' on texoma and that was a good 25 kt wind. Theres a difference between being choppy and being rollers though. A 2-3' chop is hell, no doubt about it, but it aint a 6' rolling sea. We see 10-20' seas every winter and spring offshore and its nothing short of miserable. I guess I could see it possibly being 3-4 on the roughest of roughest of days out on the main lake but no way its anything bigger than that. Texoma is big, but it's not That big.

I have seen 3 maybe 4 on Buchanan and it lays out north to south. I wouldn't think texoma any worse. In a small boat I bet it fills like 5-6 with the occasional 10.

Captbud, I would guess since you are an ocean guy you are measuring a wave correctly by this I mean you measure from sea level not the bottom of the trough to the crest of the wave. The Amp. on a waves is typically how seas are measured. Most people inland see a wave and they are measuring from the trough to the crest so those 2' foot chop waves as you called them are 4 footers to us inland guys. If you are saying the waves do not get over 2' from the trough to the Crest I will have to disagree and I have lived here my whole life.

This is like the Rocky Mtn count of deer antlers of counting 1 side (vs) counting both for a total points.

The correct way to measure is from trough to crest, Personally i've seen 25kt winds outside of preston point and it was a solid 2' chop, i could see how others might think its rougher because the waves are spaced so close together but Frankly, wave height is subject to opinion. In hindsight I could believe a 3-4 wave on Texoma, but theres no way i believe its big enough to generate 6' rollers. Feel free to prove me wrong, holler at me when there are 6'rs out there and ill gladly bring my boat out to see and eat crow.

I have been caught in T-storms twice on that lake in a 20' Champion and it takes two footers with ease. I thought I was going to die and could not U turn for fear of rolling the boat. You hang around there long enough and you'll learn the hard way.

I have a 20' offshore boat and have had it in a solid 4-5' sea outside of Galveston, I'm pretty confident she can take whatever Texoma can throw at her.

anytime you want to truly see texoma in its big nasty mode just come over to the OKIE side with a good 20mph sustained wind just north of platter flats. I have been there with 5-6' rollers and after over 45 yrs boating/30+ yrs as a carpenter I can guage height pretty good.
when you are in a 19' bass boat and sitting at the helm then go into a trough that wont let you see over the humps on either side of ya you got some serious water (I am 6'2" and sit about 4 1/2' from water to top of head at the helm of a bass boat). had a cabin at buncombe creek for a few yrs, texoma is not a lake to go learn rough water technique on.
