I plan to fish the Yegua for the first time this spring. If the water is up, when do you guys starting fishing the creek? As early as January or much later? Thanks.

i have caught crappie in the deeper holes in mid dec.if lake comes up to pool and water reaches the creeks, the whites will begin to make there run up the creeks early to mid feb.full spawn will follow.based on past years, you can catch limits from mid feb.to about the 1st of april, then they start heading back to the main lake, then u can catch whites off wind blown points,as they are hungry and chasing shad....

December can be really good for Crappie in either Yegua or Nails Creek. I've caught White Bass as early as December in Nails Creek. In January you can catch a limit of White Bass in the Yegua if you find a deep hole where the fish are staging, but February and March are when theyre really running. All of this depends on water level of course.

Yep everything creek-wise feeding Lake Somerville depends heavily upon rain. COE lake level The lake is still over three feet below pool level but all this rain should bring it up before whitebass time! There is a good population of crappie and black bass that stay in the creek year-round but the fishing is better in wet years.

Weather permitting and if the gate at Newman's is open I may take the yak out there this Friday. I'm really curious to see if the Crappie are biting.

I seriously doubt if the gate to Newmans is open and I suspect the Yegua is up and muddy. We have received slow study rain since Friday all over the area.

Looks like the lake is on the rise again so there must be some water flowing in the Yegua. That's a good thing. If the lake comes up another foot it will be at the same level it was last year about this time. http://somerville.lakesonline.com/Level.asp

Drove by the lake Tuesday morning to see the Yegua and Nails Creek flowing well with lots of muddy flood water. I stopped in a Nails Creek park to see the lake and its is slowly coming back up. I hope there's enough water in the creeks currently to get the lake up another foot allowing us access from the lake. Newmans Bottom is closed currently because the culvert just before the parking lot has washed out. TPWD and Lee county road commissioner are working on getting the washout repaired asap.

As always, thanks for the update. It's great to see so much water flowing in Nails and Yegua Creek. It doesn't look like I'll be fishing that muddy water this weekend, but maybe next weekend.

If it doesn't rain too much from now until mid December I'll be making the first trip up the Yegua from the state park Saturday December 14th.
The lake came up about an inch overnight and that rise rate should continue for at least 5 days bringing the lake to within 2-1/2ft of pool level and high enough for us to get into the Yegua. We might be draggin yak to the mouth of the Yegua but from there all is good.
The flow rate in both Nails and the Yegua will be more than enough to guide the fish up the creek from the lake. This could be the best year for Somerville creek fishing in the last ten or so. Jerdelle & Birch creek are a big question mark in this situation but either creek can turn on greatly with localized heavy rain or flooding of the lake proper pushing water way back up into those watersheds.

I have been watching Yegua flow and lake levels too. I started catching whites on the Yegua last year on Jan.17 I plan on kayaking the creek again this year probably twice per week starting around mid Jan. I think another 2 to 3 inch rain in the Giddings Dimebox area around New Year or so will give us a great white bass spawning run...Lawton
