My parents bought a couple acres on the Brazos below Granbury. I have never fished that part of the river before. How is the fishing there? Are there any smallies on that stretch?

I have caught many Striper on that stretch of the river using my fly rod. I have also caught a bunch of hybrids, sandies and gar! If you go, post a report. I usually used a clouser when fly fishing and used assassins when using my casting rod. Good luck

That part of the Brazos has been plagued by golden algae blooms over the last sevearal years, but it's trying to bounce back. Here's a write up we did on LSC a year ago about the stretch of river near Pecan Plantation: Lone Star Chronicles: Back to the Brazos

Thanks for the write up Bert.
Joe I'll let you you know when I'm ready to go. They just signed on the property yesterday and it will be at least 6 months until they start to build their house. Guess I need to buy a river kayak now.

It's true the past couple of years have been hard on that stretch. I think there is real potential there though. Granbury received a lot of stripers this year and it is full of sand bass right now. If Granbury stays healthy for a couple if years the river below will greatly benefit. Plus public access is dificult so not a lot of pressure there. Even the worst spots on the Brazos can be fun and hold hidden gems!

I live in Pecan and fish the River often. The blooms have taken a toll on this stretch of River but there are still some fish that will play. I would love to fish with you any time. Send me a pm when you get some Dates set.

I've been on that stretch since the early 90s and, frankly, the fishing sucks of late. Mostly carp and gar patrolling the shallows. It was great (easy) for sand bass, occasional striper, and catfish back in the day when there was water but not much of that lately. They open a gate for an hour or so at noon every day, just a teaser really but enough to keep you mostly afloat if you got to go. Also tough to get lost in the river environment along that stretch these days. Pecan inhabitants have taken to parkland-like landscaping. So if you like urban sprawl, you can look to the right. If you prefer the native Brazos, look to the left and hope that not many to the right are mowing their piece of the river that day. Oh, and I'm generally the first one in the river when the water and weather are agreeable.

Late 90's lake Granbury. Was loaded with 10 lbs. bass. Was the hottest bass lake in Texas at the time. Then stupid algae hit. But things are getting better.

If the Lake ever gets back up and they let some good water out of the dam I'd lake to float the stretch from the dam to Hwy 67. When that happens I'll be looking for a shuttle.

Thanks for all the advice guys. Hopefully the water will be up by the time they have the house built. How far down did the algae bloom effect the river? They are about halfway between the dam and highway 67. I guess I'll at least be close to Wheeler.

The ga in the river is really not that big of an issue. The river recovers pretty quickly. Lake Granbury was hit the hardest and the drought has not helped. All that trickles down to the river below. That bring said the fishing is great on Granbury lately and if things keep improving that section will be a great spot.
