They are pretty harmless unless you do something stupid, but I would keep the dog away from the water's edge. Gators will happily make a meal out of your pooch. When I lived and fished in FL I heard stories of gators swatting dogs out of boats with their tails. Have no idea if it is true but that is what I was told.

a guide told me once about some guys that were coming to Fork with their float tubes.
they were fishing during the daytime and had great results. So they thought if they came at night it would be better.
Apparently they chose to fish in an area where one of the few gators we have live and got scared out of their pants. Said they would never come back.
That being said there are literally thousands of all types of fishing people coming to Fork ever year. With pet dogs, with children in all manner of boats, kayaks, tubes, bank fishing and wading and I have never heard of anything being eaten by a gator.
I guess they eat the nutra, turtles, fish, ducks, deer, wild pigs, beavers and otters. Nature in action.
I saw a guy in White Oak one day fishing out of a tube. Had a nice stringer of crappie......I thought he was nuts

Leave the gators alone.

There are gators all in the lampasas and have been for years. Saw three in one day a few years back and I've seen the big one at least a time or two for the last five years.

I have family that have lived in Florida since the late 40s and they have a semijoke that goes you can tell the new yankees in the neighborhood by the ropes tied to empty dog collars. The gators crawl up on to the dogs rope and follow the rope to dinner. The really dumb yankees get a replacement pooch and tied the new dog on the same rope.

About the only time they are aggressive is during mating season and when they are guarding the nest or babies. During that time it is best to just stay away from them. I have had more than one growl at me at Choke Canyon which has lots of gators.
