Adam P the tournament with the huge bags was in 97 or 98 and it was a combined club tournament with the old original North Texas Bass anglers and one other club. He couldn't recall the names of that club but Freddy did have 42 lbs and got second. I wasn't there and did not personally witness it but I know the guys pretty well and had no reason to call BS . My living source was a guy named Doug Duncan who used to be in that club. The original North Texas Bass Anglers was a club from Pilot Point founded in the late seventies. There were some really good fishermen in it, including Rabbit and John, and dominated about everything that came to Ray Roberts. By the late nineties they had morphed into the Lake Ray Roberts Sportsmen Association with the goal of the preservation of the fishery of Ray Roberts. There was never a club challenge with the original NTBA, and the only stringer recognized by locals to be weighed in over 40 pounds in a tournament was John and Rabbit's in one of K.D. Moore's Pro Team tournaments. And that's all I have to say about that.

Well I guess I am a idiot for not having absolute proof and the guy that was there and part of it that I talked to yesterday is a liar. Shame on me, I'll do better to fact check in the future before I post about any large stringers on Ray Roberts, afterall I am just a ignorant rookie that hardly knows what I am talking about. I hope you will except my apologies

God Tiltman. Did you not go through the proper TFF fact authentification worksheet before you posted? At least 75 members must approve of numbers provided in a post or you're a liar and an idiot. I mean, these guys literally impounded the lake.

Come on guys. Tiltman has been around along time. The man is not the lying kind or does he stand to gain anything from fabricating such a story.

Thought this original post was about Ray Roberts being a disappointment, not who won or didn't win, what with, & how much, or how many. Lets talk about the lake and the fishery, not the tournament results. Start another topic if you want to argue about tournament results from the '90s which have absolutely no bearing on the lake today. Not everybody fishing this lake is a "tournament fisherman". Some of us just prefer the contest between us and the fish, not other anglers. There's enough of a challenge right there.

Man these Ray Roberts guys are tougher than us Ray Hubbard know it alls. Propman, I made a post on the lake talking about how good it used to be and referenced an apparently imaginary tournament from the good ol grass days. Then I was basically told point blank didn't happen by the all know tournament Oracles that I was full of S and it never happend. So I was basically trying to convey that indeed it did. But again I will take your admonishment, put my tail between my legs and not involve my ignorant ace in any more Ray Bob posts.

The lake has had its ups and downs. What has been a disappointment is the biologist that took care of that lake for so long. I went to the meeting when they were wanting to implement the slot and when they were wanting to take it off. At the last meeting he said the lake had average black bass poulation for the body of water. And he said the reason they were not stocking more bass was that the lake had all the fish it could handle. The lake is just like all the rest around Texas .You will have good and bad days.

BACK IN THE DAY........
It was a different lake, I have no idea what happend. Tons of really decent size fish, grass everywhere in huge fields of it loaded with fish. 18 inch MLL , 42 pounds for second in a tournament. I fished that tournament. I cant recall the name of the trail but was run by a guy out of Granbury. We had 28 pounds and got like 6th place, I believe Aruther Tucker won that day. Lots of big sacks. It might have been Anglers Choice I believe the Jeesake (s/p) brothers had a 40 plus sack just a few weeks before that tournament. Both of these tournaments took place in April of 2001

Hey Tiltman. I know the saying;"I fish, therefore I lie", but I did not mean to challenge the honesty of your post, which I believe, because I had days like you mentioned, back in the '90s and early 2000's, when I first started fishing this lake. Only wanted to get the thread back to the original question. The major difference from those days to today, and the difference that causes any disappointment in the lake today as compared to back when it first opened, came because of the big draw down (can't remember the exact year, but I'm sure somebody will give it to us)when all the hydrilla got killed off.

I know I was being a smart A , I felt my original post was on Topic. But like you mention the grass, we had it to on Hubbard back then and gone. Not to sound like a conspiricy theorist but did TPW do something to both lakes? Was there a spraying or grass carp deal ? Hubbard had huge fields of main lake hydrilla just like R Bob and it was loaded with fish. Or eve RC it was a hyrilla monster on the huge flat at the dam.

They sprayed the grass on Roberts. They did it by plane. Was actually fishing that day and watched as they made several passes over the grass on the west side of the island. I am not sure that they actually sprayed or that they were just looking but the grass started dyeing shortly after that. I say it was in the late 1999 that this happen, was trying to look threw my log on Roberts. That along with a draw down to repair the Dam pretty much wiped out the biggest majority of the grass

They sprayed the grass on Roberts. They did it by plane. That along with a draw down to repair the Dam pretty much wiped out the biggest majority of the grass They didn't spray the grass with some plane. The ten foot draw down to place rocks deeper on the face of the dam was around '94. The grass started after that. In the late nineties there was a 16 foot drop due to drought. That put all the hydrilla high and dry for quite a while. The lake came up fast after a flood and the lake was muddy for weeks heading into the winter. No light could penetrate for the grass. That was also about the time LMBV was impacting all the lakes in Texas. Ray Roberts just never recovered to its past glory.

In 2013, TPWD stocked RR with over half a million Florida bass fingerlings. None were stocked in 2012 and the 2013 amount was the most since 2001.
