In my opinion there's no use wasting money on a three ft net that's not gonna get any bait. Get at least a 6ft and learn to throw it right the first time around.

I was fishing a tourney one weekend and got my good net hung ripped it bad. I got it hung in the deep hole there on 751. went over to goodies to see what they had and bought there 3ft net. JOKE I pulled that thing out of the box and I was so freaking mad. just like tom said at least a 6ft but learn the 7. You will never regret it.

GOOD ADVICE FROM BOTH THESE GUYS--

What has happed to you does not define who you are-

HOW you react to what happens to you DOES!

I made this video of myself practicing with an 8' cast net, so I could see what I was doing and repeat it. There are a lot of methods. This one worked best for me at this time anyway. Easy to throw off the bank, dock, or my open bow boat. I don't have to get wet to throw it, or put anything in my mouth as some methods. I am also right handed and this feels more comfortable and I have more strength this method. It works on my 6', 7', 8'. The largest you can use in Texas is a 7', I use the 8' in Oklahoma as it is legal up there. And yes practice, practice, practice at home like quoted above. The one tip to throwing this method is throw it easy. Don't try and sling it around hard. Just toss it gently and it opens up. If you throw hard it will taco shell on you. I too recommend a 6' to get started. Hope this helps, but if not try the other methods as you might find they work better for you. Good luck!

When you buy yiur new net, soak it in 2 gallons of water with a cup of fabric softner added. Makes throwing that much nicer! Oh and please rinse it in your yard so you don't pollute. Your yard can take that small dose with no problem.

I use the cheapo mono's from Walmart or Academy. Usually the 6' size. If I can find a 7' I get it but usually 6' is the largest they have.
There are a lot better cast nets out there you can buy for more money. But the way I tear up cast nets I stick with the cheapos and I still catch plenty of bait.

I know this is an old threaded, but wanted to comment.

Wow! It took me awhile to learn to throw my 5'. I have a neurological disorder, so upper body strength is an issue for me, and I fatigue quickly, but after watching this, I.really think I could throw a 7. You really aren't "throwing" it with all the rotation and complications I see some guys do - just a real nice easy toss.

Thanks!

I can throw a 12' net with the same effort it takes to throw a 5'net
Its all about technique and practice,practice,practice . . . . .

What does your 12' weigh compared to a 5'?

I thought the max in Texas was 7'.
