those of you that follow my stories probably know I try to ketch crappie in the mighty trinity river . well today was like all the rest . I had the need , I had the spot and I had the WIND . man it was howlin down the river today . couldn't cast well at all , I got me several good presentations under a float like yesterday same bait . nada zip nothing!tried pitchn it and slow rollin it like yesterday as well , nada ,zip , some more nothing . well I tell myself lets hit it , then last second I say hmmmmmm maybe my really weird wally world special just for grinz ?

so sorry yawl , got caught up in other things last night .anyway I go down to the ole bank spot on the trinity yesterday to keep up with the jones .like I said it just wasn't no dice and I almost went bye bye ,but to give up is to admit defeat and its just not in me to give up easy .
well my silly crappie magic jig head with spinner blade and my Akre salty twin tail grub got a go since it has been a producer in the last 3 or 4 trips and today was no different ...
first cast I had it almost to the bank in maybe 5 or6 foot of water and I get picked up , it tugs pretty hard and I think bream , but its determined and begins to pull a bit more so I say what the heck I will stick the bream , had it on for a second and gone . so I make a another toss just in case . well about the same spot I get a pronounced thump , set the hook up comes a small crappie right quick and bye bye the jig . I kinda think it followed my bait from deeper water so I repeat the process . sure enough about halfway back to me peck peck thump

so now I have the pattern and start methodically hookin me some fish . about every cast gets bit , some pretty far out some pretty close . I can see some very very small baitfish on the surface between me and the bridge columns and occasionally they scatter and jump due to some sort of feeding activity . now the bait size seems to be an indicator right now to the fish size .

well here we go , the fish are biting , I got me a pattern to exploit and I stay on em , I get me a rather pronounced thump and I set the hook . this particular fish was pretty far out in between columns and on the hook set ketchn sez yeah buddy its a good one .....
little rod bends down and fight begins ....I am stoked I so think I got me a real good fish and then it surfaces as them far out crappie always do and low and behold it aint terribly big ?
it sure is putting up a jim dandy of some crappie action for its size ....
it even makes a dive and starts that ole sand bass sideways pullin , well I say golly good thing it weren't no whale with all that fight , I would a probably never landed it.
that's when ketchn sez hmmmmmmm
poor lil thang must agot bit by something , look at that tattered tail fin ....
wait just a minute ....WHAT THE HECK ?
look at this sand bass tail growing out the middle of its crappie tail !!!!!
this is about the oddest thing I ever seen yawl , I call pnsp to tell him and he says you kept it right ?
I say well um ,,,,,NO ....its lunch break and I got nowhere to put it , he says no one will believe you, I say well maybe not but I got me a few pictures of this thing ...
this particular specimen will be yet another ketchn subspecies

this here is a shot of it right out of the water
rather elongated top and bottom fins ....hmmmm
and the poor lil thing had its tail chewed on it seems at first glance ....wait just a minute yawl ....
this tail aint a chewed thang !!!
it grew this way ? what in the heck ????

got a few close ups of this tail for yawl to see , it was really freakin me out , I said well no wonder you fight so well ...
ya got ya 2 tails ? and the fish seemed to quite healthy .
the only other thing I noticed was it had a bit more muscle at the base of the tail .
and of course when chattin with another forum member he says well da ...ketchn ....it has a thicker muscle to drive that double tail thing ...

then I decide to amble down the concrete and get it in the sunlight for closer examination ....
I took a couple more photos at that time
let me just say this ...those a you that doubt the story
will say for sure I did whatever to this fish
I promise I didn't , took it right out of the ole trinity this way ....
got to love chemically polluted and induced genetic mutations ya know ...

there is always a good part to this kinda thing and here it comes , to ...
those of you that keep and consume these fish here locally will appreciate the fact that a almost legal fish in the future will be good to go with the new subspecies alterations
it has a full one inch more tail to make it check a bit better in the ole crappie shoe ...
so when pinchin the tail on these do ya pinch the sandy part a the tail
or the crappie part of the tail ???

well the rest a the 45 miniutes was somewhat uneventful , I ketched me a few more lil crappie and the ole river rat bass man shows up an ketchez him a bass or 2 ...
the lunch break is fun and I release a few more to get bigger in the ole mighty trinity river ....
I think I landed me 5 regular crappie , 1 bass
and mist a bite or 3 ...

if anyone has ketched them a fish like this or seen this before I would be interested to know when and where . I cant believe I let it go . pnsp was right I should have kept it to give the fish biologist and it didn't even occur to me . I was kinda like WOW this is the weirdest of freak a zoids ever ...
then I thunk well almost ...there is always that "Ketchn" fella as well ....

WTH? Ketchn I told you about that water...hope you washed your hands real good before you ate your lunch...I'm just say'n

I did sir ....man I makes me nervous to think what all is these here local waters , I know they have a place where you can see the recommended amounts to consume from the waters here , and in some cases its a really small portion
4 ounces a month er something ?
unless young or preganant , then zero ?
yawl really think hard before ya feed your kids and or expecting mothers any fish here locally.
now don't get me wrong , most of our "food" sources are full of things we shouldn't consume and our food chain here in the us is very diversified .
we get a lot of food items from places that don't care whats in the food or water . if it is brought in to our country in bulk and repackaged it doesn't have to tell where it actually came from ....
they just say distributed by ....the same applies to the waters and fish ..
look at the water sheds coming to your lake and the industry and possibilities of pollutants that could be in the water .
I have concerns that we are modern day romans yawl ....
do a bit of research on your favorite lakes and the water quality , the water in this spot comes from a source that the inhabitants get warnings with the water bill saying drinking it will cause cancer ....
we will be our own demise I am pretty sure if not careful
