Anybody have a chunk/drop/troll rig they might be looking to let go of? I have a nice one you can use Penn TW 30 2 speed on a 5'-8" custom rod. It can also handle some good sized AJ's.

Yeah ..... happy birthday Charlie !!! Not 49 again?
Charlie .... last year on the trip they AJ fished at the floater. This was a first time for me. there were some nice AJ caught and a lot of breakoffs too. I'm not sure if your normal arsenal includes stuff to do the hand to hand AJ fishing there at the floaters but maybe someone will chime in here to advise you what worked for them.
Bobby yea, i was a couple of those break offs... forced me to increase my arsenal with a bigger two speed reel... Thanks for all the birthday well wishes Yall.. I have not been 49 for some time Mr. Jones. LoL I've got a Tiagra 30 LRS 2speed and Avet HooX Raptor 2 speed that will both put out more drag than I care to hold but they will both turn a serious AJ's head. If anybody needs to borrow 1 for some AJ at the rig I can hook you up. I also have a 6/0 114H with factory metal frame and HT 100 drags that has whooped some good AJ's if you bring an 80# rod. I recommend this one for younger types if we are on fish over 50# because it's single speed.

Hey Bazztex what size line do you run on the 6/0. I have 130 hollow but was wondering if you run 80lb, 100lb mono/flouro or do you rig it differently?
Can someone explain how the Feds count recreational Red Snapper catch?

You just need 80# line or better for AJ's of good size braid or mono will work. I like Mono for live bait and braid for jigging but that 130# braid would do well either way. It's empty at this time so if you want to use it what ever you like is fine with me.

No problem we can switch out chunk rigs throughout the night and see what you like using best to get a better feel for what style rig you want to buy in the future . I always bring back up and loaner gear, I'd hate to see anyone suffer for lack of equipment after paying all that money to go fishing with our crew. You're welcome to use any of my rigs, I can only fish with one at a time.

Thanks Bazztex I reallyl appreciate it.. I've got the go ahead from the wife to get what I need for the trip but I just have trouble pulling the trigger on something not knowing what I'm getting into.. I want to stay versatile something I can do chunk/drop/ lite trolling, I know I want a 30 size 2speed but there are so many to choose from and rod selection is another question mark..
I don't get hung up on brand penn, avet, Shimano..

Bazztex I have 6/0 and I am going to send it to Basil to get a topshot put on it, but wondered what people were using for AJ when they were off the shelf. Thank you for the help. I had already planned to put 80 on it so that is what I will stick with. After thinking about it some more there isnt a reason to put more than 80 unless abrasion resistance is needed because it cant produce enough drag to break 80 even with the upgraded drag washers I have added.
I would really like to get a Makaira 15 or so, but my kids are reaching sports at school ages and I see my trips becoming even less than they are now.
42 days, I can smell the salt now!

42 days, I can smell the salt now! Check out the narrow spool Avet Hoo-X HXJ 5/2 MC Raptor quite possibly the most versatile reel for off shore you can jig, cast & troll. 2 speed with 40# strike and 50# max drag will hold 375yds 100# braid. $445 at Charkbait By popular demand Penn has brought back the 113HN Baja special a narrow 4/0 topless metal frame 4.25:1 ratio will pull 26# of drag. $249 it's a great budget reel for beginners or old salts alike. It has harness lugs so you can fill it up with 80# braid and fish for just about anything that swims in the gulf. I have one I love and I'm thinking about buying a second new one.

Your welcome Ronnie, I wish they had them when I was younger. All I had was the 114H 6/0 but that was a great reel. It just did not have the drag to be a great all around reel before the HT 100 drag discs and it was cumbersome compared to the size of the Baja 113HN. In my opinion it's the best all around offshore reel in it's size and price range hands down. They have them at www.Charkbait.com of course.

Expect a group email later tonight or sometime this weekend, (depending how the dove hunting situation develops through this weekend) to those currently on the TFF Doce Tuna charter.
