Thanks for the responses. I had always thought that when a fish was hooked it would not bite again for several days. So all those undersized fish I have thrown back could have had a second run at my jig the same day or my wife's minnow the same day, inflating the number of fish caught. Guess I need to keep them in the second live well until I am ready to move to the next spot.

Fishing a tournament my partner hooked and lost a 7lber on a trashpile. About an hour later we hit spot again and i caught that same fish with the hole in his lip from frog on a crankbait. That same day I had a 5-6lber break me off on a dock. Less than an hour later my partner had caught that same fish with my bait still in its mouth off that dock. I have other incidents of similar type happenings. I do not think there is a hard and fast rule on time frame. Differs fish to fish.

I've had the same thing happen. Fishing a tourney on OH Ivie, I had a bite set the hook and broke off instantly. 10 minutes later in same area my partner catches a fish and it had my hook and fluke in it's mouth with about 10" of line hanging off it. Just really depends how aggressively they are feeding at the time and obviously you can catch the same male off a bed multiple times during the spawn.

You should hear a biologist compare the difference in the earthen ponds that contain the Florida strain LMB brood stock and the native strain. The Florida fish are completely different in feeding, but also in how quickly they "learn a lure".
My point is...... It depends on the genetic composition of the fish as well.

I think fish will hit again immediately if they are in the same area but alot of times they move off after being caught. I read a study in great britain that pretty much proved that they dont have the capacity to feel pain. Basically meaning that you barely interrupted anything and they are going to just go on about their business.

This has been an interesting thread. I thought fish would feel the pain of a hook and would be turned off from feeding for awhile. I also thought they would stay in the same general area, they just would not feed. So the next time I lose a big one I am going to offer the same thing again to see if I can get a second strike.

A few years ago a friend of mine broke his line on a fish on Gilmer. Not three minutes later I caught the same fish with his hook and fluke still in its mouth. He's still calling BS on that one.

I missed a fish one morning on TBend, came back through about noon and caught her. She still had my worm in her mouth/throat.
Spawners.....some of them get caught a lot. We caught one 11 lb bass 3 times one weekend. Each time on a different bait. She wouldn't hit the same bait twice.
I hear some bass have a certain gene that makes them more liable to hit a bait....while others don't have that gene may never get caught or bite a bait. When people keep(eat) that certain gene bass (one that bites more) you loose that gene out of the spawning pool over the years. That's why you see lakes go "dry" IMO....bass are still there but the genes have changed. I always find that interesting.

We only keep and eat crappie. However I have seen crappie fishing become slow in a lake when too many people are taking the limits home everyday. I like to catch large numbers of fish but we only keep five or six each day to eat. So we return most of the crappie we catch to the lake. So the bass are safe with us and most of the crappie as we prefer our fish to be fresh when we eat them. Besides this gives us an excuse to go fishing several days a week to get fresh fish.

Depends on the individual fish.

As someone said, some bass are prone to hit multiple times within a time frame, others go into a shock for a few days. Some bass never bite a lure their entire lives. Others seem to target lures exclusively, possibly due to their predator instinct and the vibe some lures give off, e.g. a spinner bait. I have caught bass on back to back casts before, nearly yanking my rod out of the boat before I could even grab it.

I remember reading an article about a study on that subject. The conclusion was that some bass are caught over and over while others are caught once or never. It was about 50/50 whether a fish was a repeat catchee or not, if I remember right. This would explain my problems at Lake Raven.

I was fishing with several friends on a pontoon boat. A guy on the back caught a fish using a crawfish crank bait. He took it off the hook and dropped it back into the water. The crawfish crank bait was floating in the water beside the boat. The fish did an immediate U-turn and grabbed the crawfish again. Crazy!
