Most of the time yes. But keep in mind, it is a tailrace. Releases can occur at anytime with little warning. Also, access is limited, so not many opportunities to bail out if you get caught downstream when they generate or drop a gate. I rode out a gated release below PK a few years ago. It got real sporty, real fast! eek Turned out they were just doing some maintenance work on the dam and they dropped several gates.

Thanks for the info. Sounds like I need to find a safer place to paddle.

I'll be down there this weekend. I am bringing my Bear Grylls knife so hopefuly I will make it out alive.

If anyone wants to join or team up to run our own shuttle let me know.

HUH?
As long as they don't open several gates you will be fine. Since we are in a drought I doubt they will open enough to be dangerous.
Generation at whitney is not dangerous more than any other fast flat water. I have launched many times below the damn and it is just that fast flat water. Ther is usually a place on one side or the other to get out if you tip over. I have ridden this river with kids and grownups and have never had any problems.

Dont get me wrong it is still moving water and life jackets are necessary. Be careful and have fun.

I feel more like I do now than I did when I first got here!

Where do you typically put in? I'm thinking of trying it out Friday. I've been to Whitney many times, but never below the dam.
