I use bed liner all over my jeep and it's tough as nails. Has anyone considered lining just the keel to protect it from gravel and rocks? I'm thinking about taping off an area on the keel and doing it

I gave some thought to it. I heard it doesn't stick to the yak very well though.

Well, I will probably tape off just a 3 inch wide strip down the keel when I get home and see how she does. It won't hurt anything and I have some plastic welding to do too. Weight isn't an issue as only the keel will be sprayed. My triton's floor was covered with white bedliner and it never had any issues. If anyone had a bad experience, please post. As long as it doesn't eat my plastic, I'm game

You can get bedlining kits from most auto parts retailers. Probably a few places to order it online too.

Bet you could go to a Line-X place and they would do it for like $50 if you let them wait until they had another job simultaneously.
I would rather Line-X than Rhino since it is lighter and less viscous

When I was in Florida the kayak rental dealer took a piece of aluminum about 3/4" wide, about 1/8" thick and about 1 foot long. Bent it to fit the back of the keel. Countersink screwed it on with stainless screws and sealant. He did this on just about all of his kayaks and paddle boards. He said it was what worked best for him because people were dragging his boats over all all sorts of things. I asked him if it ever leaked and he said no that keel with thick enough to prevent that.
RealBigReel I don't go too fast but I go pretty far.

I have a pint or so of rustoleum bed liner and another pint of rhino. I will probably use the rustoleum as it is a smoother texture. I will also probably do a triangle around each scupper since they tend to stick out a bit on ocean kayaks. I'm going to have to tape off quite a bit as the over spray is thick when bed lining and it doesn't come off easily! I'll post pics tonight when I'm done. If anyone hears of it eating their plastic, let me know!!! I did bedline my vents in my jeep without issue, so I assume it will be fine. I have bedliner my floors and under side of my hood too

Do you use the rustoleum on your jeep? Is it the one that is "tough as nails" ? I am looking to use a product like this for my roof rack. I would like smooth finish and "tough as nails"

I mainly use rustoleum on my jeep since I ride barefoot often. I have not had to spray or touch up in two years. I only sprayed on two coats, so the stuff must be tough. I have one layer of rhino on my hood. It has also held well. My rims are also rustoleum and don't have a single chip on them.

Home depot has it in spray cans back in the paint dept. Works good on metal but I wouldnt think it would stick to plastic.

The guy I bought one of my kayaks from sprayed a liner on most of the hull. Im not sure how long before I bought it he did it, but I was able to remove it pretty easily with just water and a sponge. I would say it doesn't hold very well...

The number one cause of coating failure is improper surface preparation. Number two is the wrong coating for the specification, i.e. is it designed to perform on a particular substrate in a particular environment.
Don't just go by the label. Contact the manufacturer.
Good luck.
