You can use a dye instead of stain and get an even color on pine instead of the grainy splotchy look you get with stains on pine. Mesquite would look good. Someday I'm going to buy me a big bandsaw and cut my own.

i'd like to do that too. my next project i'm going to make a table top out of mesquite with the raw edge on the outside. wife like the farm house legs and what not so i'll probably be keeping a raw mesquite top and let her paint/antique or whatever she calls it the legs and apron.
