One time I was fishing at Aberhoff, on the Nueces river.. And we were fishing an oxbow that was lined with oak trees on one side.. It was hot and we were fishing in the shade in the back of the cove.. There were a bunch of low hanging roots from an old oak tree and you could see where over the years, the water had washed the dirt out from the roots, and they had become barklike on their way down to the water..
And we noticed that several of the roots were just off the water. There is a ton of wildlife on this stretch of river, including lots of squirrels..
There was one sitting on one of those roots just above the water eating an acorn.. We weren't really watching at the exact second, but we heard a big splash and turned and looked and the squirrel was gone, and water was dripping off everything around the root where he was siting..
We couldn't believe it.. And while we were staring at the place where the squirrel was, we saw a bass come half way out of the water, and set another acorn on the root..

I've had a bass jump out of the water and caught my top water before it could hit the water. Did I say water enough times in one sentence?

Good one, James! You got me hook, line and sinker with the squirrel story!

That was the best!! Thanks

Fishing Lake Morena in San Diego once at dusk throwing a Rapala top water twitch bait. Had a 2 pounder take it out of the air in about a foot of water. The two guys I was with saw it too and we just looked at each other and shook our heads. Hungry fish.

I was fishing at a local pond with a wacky rigged senko, and was pulling it out of the water onto the bank when a bass jumped a foot out of the air grabbed my bait and landed on the bank. This happened twice in one night.
