If you do it this way, you cannot keep a finger on the line and bites will be missed.

Trigger goes between middle finger and ring finger....pointer finger rides the line for the best sensitivity!

How about most of my fishing does not allow touching the line. Its a practice some people use when fishing slow that I've never really got much out of.
Most of my time is fishing short casts or moving baits. Almost none of it would allow anyone to effectively hold it any other way. But if shifting my grip every cast to hold the line was advantageous I would do it.

You're spot on. I am looking to better balance my rod by purchasing a new reel for it.

I like to change my grip up as I change up my presentation. It all depends on whether the rod tip is up or down. If I'm fishing a senko where my rod is mostly at 10oclock I'm going to have maybe even all 4 fingers above the trigger that way I'll get a better balance.

At first it was about the fish, now it's about so much more...

I also change my grip up depending on the presentation. I will mostly be fishing with my rod tip up.

dad taught me to fish w/ plastics holding it so i could put the index finger on the line to feel more bites, it's the only way i can hold it now, which is fine til you set the the hook with some flouro line or light braid with it there. even after many paper cut type injuries that finger still refuses to get off the line, it has a mind of it's own i swear.

I palm the reel with my index finger across the front of the reel so I can put it on the line. Feels weird when I put my had on the handle further back off the reel.

2X, I don't have to chang hands after the pitch or cast.. Always ready to engage the spool and set the hook if needed.. Worm fishing I use the index finger above the reel with the line touching the index. Works for me
