I was suppose to go yakking the Guad yesterday, but canceled last moment. Instead I decided today the lake traffic would probably less and make for a better day of fishing. I also decided to forgo the yak and just do some bank fishing. I was trying a new bait with the goal of catching monster redears. No luck with the redears, but the redbreast were ready to play! Other than one small bass that's all I caught! Most were the size of the first picture, but I did catch some nice porkly ones like the second picture.

Thanks guys!

Banker I was trying a new bait under this assumption...redears are also called stump knockers or shell crackers. So I figured they must like crustaceans. I got me a mess of the little guys pictured below. But is seems the redbreast like them more than the redears. My bait is no secret, but catching them in numbers is another story! smile

LOL...yeah hellgramites are some ugly looking critters. But I guess they are no better looking than a crawdad! I have caught hellgrammites in the local rivers before. You usually find them under submerged rocks. But it takes awhile to catch a mess of them (at least it does for me).

The reason I choose crawdads is that I have a super secret hole where I can catch about 50 of them in a very short period of time (about 15 minutes). They are not big enough to eat, but they make great bait!

Crawfish will attract redears and redbreast about equally. Redbreasts are more versatile with their menu and location in the water column, but they have a slight down angle with their mouths. I Love Redbreasts. They will come up and hit a topwater and hit a bottom bouncing plastic on the next cast. They might be the sunfish who best knows how to work amend fight in the current.

Also, nice job finding crawdads that small! Perfect sunfish size! It's tough finding them that size!

I caught a mixed mess of gills, redbrest, and redear from a local hole here on LA.. they were all full of lil crawfish. Came off a lone laydown in a pocket just off a good ledge. Perfect spot and the graph was just covered w em on top of that drop off, so we caught em coming up on the ledge and log to feed on our crickets. Musta been 300 fish there, we took 50 all of em hand size n bigger. My older partner and I argued about the redbreast, he sd they were gills though I knew they had they're own name (redbreast) I didn't challenge his thinking, so I didn't catch his thought on why they looked totally difft than the really dark colored gills. Though when I Google bluegill, I also get pics of these redbreast. . So my question is what is the real difference in the 2? I noticed a big difference in their fight. The reds act like a bass b pull hard. Some of the gills just laid over but them reds were all fight. Im going back to this log, armed w some lil crawfish lookalike baits on a drop shot rig... See how that suots
