You may see this. The bright spot is a old tank dam and you should figure out what the other object is. That looks like a wind tower for pumping water or an oil drilling rig.

Find the cat fish. Zoom in and you can see the forked tail. I see the catfish with forked tail without enlarging the image and its shadow on the bottom.

I'm guessing that's a fish in the black area. Maybe there is another fish in the crane close to the base on the right side. How does it make a shadow? Is it because there is no return "behind" the fish, so you get what looks like a shadow? And how do you know it's a catfish?

Wayne, are the little white specks in the lowrance shot fish? Yes, they are little on that setting since he has 200 feet of coverage selected (100' on each side). Shorter ranges will show stuff larger.

Something I was thinking of when Wayne wrote, "I've been sticking to the topic of the OP's question". Don't take that/this in anyway personal Wayne just something that crossed my little brained mind.
Bank beater or 10ft-15ft range: What these expensive fancy new graphs can do is give you confidence to quit beating that bank and hit the open water. I was always a bank beater and still am at certain lakes but finding things like the rock pile I posted a pic of are things that help you learn how to fish the open deeper water. Do I catch a million more bass? No, but I do catch more than I used to. That's where this technology shines, finding the things you didn't know existed.

Most of the time when I am fishing, I can't reach the shoreline with a very long cast.

These beds are about about 100 yards from the shore and deeper than most would even think about fishing during the spawning period. There is school of shad on a tree in the water column at the top of the image.

If ur really a bank beater 90% of the time I would get a power pole/talon. Makes a HUGE difference shallow

I think we are getting way off topic. The OP is wanting to get away from the bank and explore off shore and was asking if the side scan technology would help him on the shallow waters he fishes.
The first image I posted was at a location about 150 yards from shore and the second one was about 50 yards from shore. I did that to show Humminbird Side Imaging does well in shallow water and would be a benefit for him.

actually i plan on adding the power poles at the same time as the side-scan, but since i'm a long way from rich, the new question might be which is better bang for the buck for the bank beater.
1. 2 power poles or 2. 1 power pole + side-scan
i'm trying to figure out how to get all three, but i'm not sure i will be able to pull it off....

If you have the 2 power poles you can hold the bost still and do some casting while hoping where you are casting has some fish.
With a power pole and a SI unit, you can find the fish, and hold the boat in position with some assistance from the trollng motor to cast to them.
