I rarely target bluegill but caught this fatty yesterday on a drop shot finesse worm targeting bass.

For those that fish and know bluegill well, is this a pretty big one? I've never seen one this big. Almost looks like a crappie.

Looks like some kind of hybrid crappie/bluegill. That thing is huge!

With the danger safely righted

That's a shellcracker. They'll get a little bigger than a blue gill on average. Nice fish!

Man, from yall's responses...seems I should've measured and weighed. I just read up on redear sunfish. Normal length is 7" to 9". This one could've surpassed that.

Lake Raven is FULL of big bream/sunfish whatever you want to call them. With a 3wt fly rod you can fill a box in no time. Pound for pound, one of the best fighting fish IMO. That's a nice one for sure!

Redear, shell cracker, chinquapin. NICE fish James - you've been tearing them up at those ponds - good work. I believe they can go 3-4lbs.....that one of yours appears to be starting "the belly". Might be a heavy intake of white bread - smile .

The coloring on them vary within the species and time of year....they have a mottling similar to a crappie and some can certainly have some resemblance - that one does IMO.

edit - did you blur the background? smile
