If you dont have a cast net to get shad then catch some perch and cut in chunks or strips, good punch is also a good option

Whole LIVE prey is what the Big'uns like,shad dont live long so catch a bunch and keep fresh bait on the hook. It also helps if your gear itself is up to the task your putting to. No bites in 2hrs(3-4 shad bait changes),MOVE cause they aint there Proper hooking of perch should last an hour or two.

FWIW you can sit on most any lake bank with perch hook tied to a tow chain and catch perch on frozen corn nibble's while you wait for " THE BITE "

Well bluegill and bass is what i typically target. just wanted to take a bit more of a laid back approach to fishing and catch some grub
