There is dirty ways to catch them if you really get mad at them, just not too sporting.Think larger bait, treble,6" leader, treble, 1' leader, main line.Use a big cork or you'll hang up for sure. One hook in head and other in tail and let them run with it then jerk the other way.Redneck way to make gar balls.Have a strong rod and at least your 30lb test.Could be fun.I honestly haven't got that mad at them but theory is sound.Keep us posted on how you do. That is what I use for a quick strike rig, set the hook as soon as they run with it. Depending on how they are feeding you will get about 75% hook ups some days, others none.

I liked using a 65lb braid leader with a # 4 treble about 2' under a bobber with a minnow or cut perch. And let them run until I counted to about 30. Then just swept the rod to side and kept pressure. I've caught quite a few that way. They would always have that treble hook either in the corner of their mouth or farther up but the braid was wrapped around their jaws.

Cool post Banderapass1, That is like something I saw on an episode of Dual Survival... the guy was catching eels in new zealand with a sock that had bait in it... but he didn't use a rod. I like your version better!

Just cast out and reel in..work it a little to make it look alive and just reel at a medium retrieve..Fish it like you would any bass bait..The gar will swim up ,grab it and get all the nylon strands tangled in its teeth. You will need leather work gloves to hold the fish down, and needle nose and a knife to untangle from its teeth.
