Went out to Wheeler yesterday. Man was it hot out. Didn't have much luck but came back with some good info. Some things you might want to know before heading out.

Park opens at 7:30. They have a gate and it is closed until opening. The man running wheeler did open at 7 yesterday.

$8 to get in.
$25 boat launch fee...kayaks are free.
15 boat limit per day...kayaks don't count towards limit.
No running of gas motors allowed...kayaks don't have to dodge those pesky pwc's.
Once you pay you can come and go throughout the day.

I used google maps for directions...they were wrong!
Here is how you get there.

Take 67 to Glen Rose
Turn Right on Bo Gibbs Blvd. (At the Best Western)
Follow Bo Gibbs until the 2 way stop.
Turn Right at the 2 way stop. (Can't remember the name)
Follow this road to the park entrance.

Water level right now is about 4 feet low.
The surface water temp yesterday was 83 degrees.

The lake is a beautiful lake with lots of standing cedar trees in the water. If the water level was at normal most of them would be in about 10 feet of water. There are some great rock piles sticking up out of the water that would be underwater if the lake was full. There are some buoys in the water not far from the ramp. These mark an underwater deck for scuba classes and a school bus sunk just last week by the dive school.

The boat ramps are great.
The parking was great.
I assume the facilities are great but I didn't use them.
Everything is pretty much new.

The couple running the park were very nice.

Here is a link to a panoramic picture I compiled. It is very large (17mb).

Wheeler Lake Pano

Jon

PS - There are some great places to eat in Glen Rose. The Green Pickle and The Pie Peddler in Old Downtown. Hammond's BBQ on 67 across the street from the Best Western. And much more but these are the ones I have eaten at.

Duh...I should have thought of that.

I could see about 4 to 6 feet.

If you are going to try and catch smallmouth I would go to Lake Murry...did you see this thread?

I should have brought my Kayak with me. I'm camping with the family at Oakdale Park.

"kayak, don't leave home without it"

Joe,
Did Tawakoni fall through?

You guys can come by and hang out if you like.
