1.) Consult a "hatch chart" for the area you will be in. It will give you a good idea of what kind of insects are there.

2.) Read fishing reports from message boards such as this.

3.) Stop into a local fly shop.

4.) Take your time and really look around when you are on the water.

See if anything is hatching out of the water or flying around.

Look for mayflies flying around and landing on stuff

Look at the grass and see if there are grasshoppers

Flip over rocks in the stream and see if any nymphs are stuck to the bottom of the rock

Look in the water for any baitfish or crawfish

Ask other fishermen what they are using

Mainly, just OBSERVE what is going on around you. Take your time and be quiet, gentle, and patient.
