I care about the definition of "kayak", requiring the use of a paddle for propulsion. I don't care if the Hobie's do poorly on one particular lake, they have an unfair advantage over those who are relying ONLY on a paddle. Yeah there are a lot of scenarios where you can't use the mirage drive, such as weeded areas or shallow areas. And if you've ever tried to paddle a ProAngler, you'll know what kind of "advantage" it can be. That dictionary definition is weak. In my mind, if your boat is propelled by manpower, you're in the club. Now all you trolling motor weenies, THAT'S a different story!!!

It sucks being blow into trees, weeds, and everything else when you're trying to fish, then look over and see the guy in the hobie, PEDDALING (not paddling) along keeping both hands on the pole.
Hahahahahahahahaha those darn hobie fans. Not to mention never having to use the $400 " Hobie " stake out pole.

to be fair, we also exhibited today how the Pro Angler can be a pain too. Getting out of little areas where you want to go backwards requires getting out a paddle. And the damn thing is a lot heavier than your yaks were (seen when walking over the rocks with them)

If you look in a Hobie catalog the PA14 is listed as a boat. I share my fishing time between my PA14 and my Bluewave Center Console. The Hobie was a Christmas present from my wife or I'd still be catching tons of fish from just a boat. Arm, leg, or wind. If your hind end is the only one in the vessel you're in a good place.

This thread has gotten me to thinking about my next kayak. I need to replace my Perception Illusion , the hull is thin after 10 years of abuse. I demoed a Hobie PA a while back. It would definitely be easier and more efficient to fish out of but the idea of not having a paddle in the water is not appealing. Yep I'm a paddler for life or at least until I get too old to paddle. Kayaking and kayakfishing to me is more about the feel, the feeling of the blade in the water, the kayak gliding after I've stopped paddling, the challenge and the thrill of paddling through confused waters. Or maybe its just that I prefer the lower windage, more manly seating position of kayaks over that of the dookie-shooter seating style of the girly pedal powered boats.

I don't know why anyone would want a human powered boat that weighed over 100 lbs. Don't think that is a kayak either. But any boat called a kayak? This is why I named my 4th boat build HYBRID (14'X28" and 40 lbs). It is sort of kayak but then it has an open cockpit and hard back seat. It is an SOT but that doesn't make it a kayak. It is sort of pirogue but not really it has hatches. It has the Mirage drive but that is the only thing Hobie about. It does have a double paddle. Some people have called it a canoe but that isn't really the right name for it either I can tell you this though it is a fishing machine. And I have had it out in weather no paddle could handle. And then I built SANDY, 14'X 28" and under 30 lbs with a high end seat. No pedals but lighter and better in many respect than anything decent you can buy. And then my 6th build, STRIPER. With the Mirage drive this kayak has handled wind and waves no paddler would have attempted. And filled the custom cooler enough times to convince most anyone. STRIPER is MY ultimate fishing machine. And if you think pedals are "girly" maybe you should try fishing in a little wind and waves with me. If I was looking for derogatory, how about those who aren't smart enough or are too lazy to build there own!!(Place appropriate icon here.)
RealBigReel I don't go too fast but I go pretty far.

I think SOS be a better name, cause everyone knows the acronym meaning, and it's funnier.
