I will say though with a chevy/gm you're giving up a lot of pulling power over Dodge/Toyota and finally Ford has caught up as well. Chevy have built a great small block but it has no tq at all which is the only thing that steered me away from them when I bought this truck. I came out of a gutless 5.4 ford after having a Duramax for a tow vehicle and although I didn't want to go back to another diesel, I didn't want another truck that groaned every time I hooked the boat up. Dodge and Toyota got their gas motors right and Dodge got the fuel mileage right. I'm happy with mine but if you're happy with how yours pulls, I'd keep it because you're not going to do a lot better on mileage with a newer one.

I agree, I came from a 1 ton cummins and the GM 5.3 was a disappointment power wise for sure after that. But I no longer pulled the gooseneck and tractor, just our boat and TT every once in a while and it pulls both fine. I just wanted to hear real world numbers from all the people who just willy nilly throw the 20 mpg number out there because once it came up on their dash readout. Im ok with giving up the power for the gain in economy.

My mother in law is on her 2nd TDI Jetta. Great mileage for sure.
Well you'd have to get over 48 and literally run the 14.5 gallon tank dry twice to do it. That being said, I love the trend of putting little diesels in these high-mpg cars. I just wish diesel didn't cost so much more than regular gas.

The new Altima gets ridiculous gas mileage too. Considering you take a 10-20 percent hit up front on fuel price with diesel and the Altima's 38 mpg highway rating, the effective cost per mile is about the same. Then when you consider the cheaper up-front price tag and ridiculous array of features for under $20k, it's really impressive to see what Nissan has been able to do with a 180-hp mid-size sedan. When Car & Driver tested it, it was the fastest, most fuel efficient and cheapest in it's class and among the best as far as amenities (tested against the Fusion, Malibu, Passat, Accord and Camry). Sorry, I'll stop bragging on it, but it really is an amazing value. Only reason I brought it up is because it could probably get close to the TDI's 700-miles-on-a-tank trick also (18 gallons at 38 mpg is 684 miles)

One of my roomates in college had an '01 jetta with a 5 speed. If he drove 60-65 it would get 50-52 straight hwy between college station and San Antonio. My best friend and another of my roomates has one also, not sure what year but its a 5-speed also and he gets about the same.

my uncle had a 07' CC 1500 with a 5.3 liter. 265/75/17's on it, Z71. I rode in that truck quite a bit, on high way trips it would get around 17 mpg. never ever saw it over 18 and my uncle drives like an old lady. When I would get behind the wheel i never saw better than 17, 16 mpg was more the average.

when we would hook the boat up to it and drive to falcon, we would get aboug 11-12 mpg. 20 ft champion with the tanks full on the way down there. sometimes we would even get 10 depending on wind. not a really heavy boat but not the lightest either.

now he owns a F-150 with the 5.0 and i've seen the mpg meter at 19 before.

I call B.S on anyone who says they get 20 in a full size truck with a V-8 and a 4x4

I get a solid 12-13.8 mpg in my truck, in a mix of highway and city

I had a ext. cab tacoma V-6 with a 5 speed, with 265's I would get 20mpg on the highway, when i put 32" mud terrains, dropped it down to 18.

Actually if its not that much of a trick to get 700 miles per tank. I've done it maybe 4 times and only because it was not needed to drive it any longer. Fifty mpg is not always guaranteed especially when running the air and going over 70 mph but if you keep it at 70 and under its going to be close. The best tank I ever had was under 700 miles but we only put 12 gallons back in it. That tank was 57 mpg.

We owned a 1984 Nissan 200SX fastback that was EPA 42 mpg highway (5 speed manual). It had a digital dash with trip computer. We have had it on several trips where it actually got 45 mpg, hand calculated, including my first trip to Springfield and Bass Pro Shops.

I like that so much attention is being given to fuel efficiency. It makes for more good choices when buying a vehicle.

We actually have 3 drivers and 4 cars due to my wife getting her Mercedes. I am looking to sell the Dodge and one of the VW diesels and replace them with a Tacoma, 5 speed manual with the 2.7 engine. Plenty enough to pull the boat and should get in the upper teens while doing it.

Call what you want but the newer Dodge 1/2 tons with a hemi will do it all day long if you can drive with sense. I did it quite a few times with just highway driving before I lost my mind and decided to lift mine. It wouldn't dream of doing it now but stock I did it quite a few times.

yeah but they cut down to 4 cyl on the highway. a V-8 without multi-displacement won't come close in a 5.7 liter engine

Seems like full-size pickups have always gotten between 15 and 20 mpg on the road. I'm talking from the 1960's up to the present.
