Robert (Back to Fishing), Julia, and I were at the Galveston Pier Friday, and had a good day. I'll let Robert let Y'all in on the particulars. But, I had to tell this part of the story, at about 9 AM or so I caught a nice slot red. After measuring it and making sure it was legal, I took my time hoisting it out of the net, taking pictures, the usual stuff. If it was going back I make sure we work very quickly, getting the fish back in the water as soon as possible. While taking pictures, Kim (everybody on the pier knows Kim) starts jumping up and down saying the fish has a red thing, I thought there was some kind of worm or something hanging out, I checked and it was a fish tag. I never saw it before that, mainly because I wasn't looking for one. Well, it turns out to be a 2013 CCA STAR tag. Which I find out later that would have been worth about $70 thousand on Saturday.... I'm still kind of stoked about it, that is a once in a lifetime fish, even if it was a day early. I feel bad that I didn't notice the tag earlier because then I would have took some quick pictures and released it. So it looks like Memorial Day's red fish dinner will be the most expensive dinner we will ever eat.

It is a skinny red plastic tubular thing with writing on it. It looks like a round zip tie.
They tag them on their back behind the rear gills, near the dorsal fin and it can be hidden when it lays next to the body and the fin.
I guess if I had the money to belong to CCA and enter the tournament I would have known to look for that thing, huh?

OK, its more in the middle of the back than near the head, it is pretty long. I'll add a few better pictures of it when I get them uploaded.

I tried to call them yesterday, just to let them know that I caught their fish and give them the tag number, don't know if they are keeping track of them for scientific purposes or not. They are closed up until Tuesday, so the saga continues.........

Here a couple more pictures of the tag. It has been in the cooler for a while so the fish isn't as pretty as it was when caught.   The tag is readable in the picture if you enlarge it, sorry I didn't do it when taking the pictures.

Wow... that's crazy! Congrats on the red. I guess we surf fishermen need to make sure we enter the tourney too.
