Guys. I think you are sadly mistaken how much it really costs to build a boat. I've been repairing Corvettes for over 35 years. They are fiberglass too. I used to pay $60 for a quarter panel for a mid year. Today those same quarters are over $400. Panel glue has gone from around $25 a quart to over $200. I have paid over $200 for 16oz of paint. All these materials are petroleum based. They are not going down. There is not that much profit in boats. Why do you think the number of manufacturers continues to shrink? You can gripe all you want. Don't like it, don't buy one. I work damn hard for my money and I'm not gonna penny pinch when I want to go fishing. To each his own!

the number of manufactures continue to shrink because most bassboats are out of reach for the average fisherman.

Really? I have heard that before but never backed up with a shipping invoice v. final selling price. I would argue if that were true, there would be no boat dealers selling new boats.

Just for curiosity sake, I propose the following question for discussion:

Why is it you can find a top of the line boat loaded to the gills ran by a pro and used for less than 100 hours cost $25 to $30K less than a new one on the showroom floor with the exact same options? And that boat is probably a better value since it has been shaken down and repaired expertly for the tournament trail or sponsorship.

A real life case in case in point in 2010: A pro in Austin ran a Ranger Z21i (2010). This boat was maxed out with all options and top of the line electronics. It had 75 hours on it. The pro was going to sell it to me for $45K out the door and the pro was going to make a few bucks on the deal. This exact same boat from the dealer that services his boat wanted $60K for the exact same rig new. I still have the e-mails to prove this. Thus my question: WTH?

Not making money. Do tell. Is Ranger Manufacturing eating this price difference that would allow the pro to sell at this price? I doubt Erwin Jacobs (owned the company at the time I think) would allow such a deal.

Not trying to poke your post in the eye or have a peeing contest but nobody has ever been able to explain this to me with clear facts.

Lastly, it's okay to make a profit. But lets get real here.

I never said boat dealers aren't making any money. They just don't make near what everyone thinks they do. The reason the pro was selling you the Ranger for 45k was because it was used. I would rather not buy a used boat. You never know what it's been through. I've seen pros abuse boats before. They are fishing for a living. The boat is just a tool to them. No offense taken. I just thought I would offer another opinion.

What's the difference from a pro selling and a dealer a lot a individual doesn't have a business to run that 15k price difference I can explain them power poles jack plate trolling motor ect doesn't just get on that boat by magic are paid on looks a lot of the 15k is to buy the products to put on the boat.
That's where a dealer makes money and not as much as you think after all his bills he might make 400 dollars it's the back side of the sale where dealer makes money in service of the boat just like any car dealership.
economics 101 it's not that hard to understand.

10 years ago I bought a boat. I got lucky when I walked into the dealership because the guy behind the counter was an old army buddy. He sold me a boat for 10,995. The sticker price on the boat was 16,995. He still made money on that boat!
I still have that boat and I have no plans to get rid of it anytime soon, over the past 10 years I have spent less than 900 for repairs. 500 of that was my own fault when I hooked the batteries up backwards at night and the electrical system burned up.
As long as people are willing to get financing for buying a 50-70k boat, they will keep selling them at those prices.
If you want to spend that kind of money for hobby fishing then god bless you, I have seen commercial fishing boats that sell for less.
Don't want to spend that much?
Then don't!

What also makes me laugh is the asking price of some of these used boats...... 17-20 year old boats for $10k-$12k? Are you kidding me?

This is just like the argument about why the Cowboys ticket prices are so high. If we as a consuming public quit buying them, the prices will come down.

Back when I was working at a job, and owned a business at the same time, $75K was a good yearly salary. Did it mean that person could "pocket" that much money? Actually, you would be doing good to pay your bills and save $5K.
If I thought I could make money owning and working a Ranger dealership, I would be doing it. The most money I ever made was when I sold the 52 acres I owned, on which I operated a business.
IMO there's a reasonable explaination for the high price of big bassboats. But, it won't change the fact that we don't like it.
There will always be open entries in MY bucket list.

Need to improve my LMB fishing, running out of time.

After 40 years on this Earth I have finally learned to NEVER but anything motorized brand new. Buy certified vehicles, low hour boats, tractors, etc... Let someone else take the hit as soon as it leaves the lot. These things are all depreciating assets... You will not make money on them.

Even at that unless you fish for a living or win a lot of tourney cash I can not see why anyone would spend over 30K for something to fish out of.

And yes my family is considered "wealthy" by this administration so I am not starving.
