... The most common mistakes I find people making: not locating a concentration of fish on the bottom before starting to fish, using too heavy line, using #2 or #3 without adding weight, not expecting a very subtle bite a lot of times, not keeping the bait on the bottom when beginning retrieve, not checking the Mepps regularly to make sure wire is not bent or line is not twisted around blade. One more tip: I have found that I can feel the soft bite a lot better if I have the rod pointing almost directly at the line during retrieve - say at a 10 degree angle to the line direction. I can't explain why but it makes a difference. Good luck!
...
the optimal balance between achieving line tension and allowing the ultra-lite rod tip(I'm assuming you're using UL rod) to detect the subtle bites as you reel in Mepps spinning blade (e.g. reeling in at larger angle tends to bend and shake rod tip as you crank making it hard to feel the lite bites)? That'd be my guess! Thank you Dennis for taking the time to share your knowledge...
The pursuit (where are the fish), rigs design and setup, scouting, the awesome feeling of casting your rigs 100+ yards out, the total focus on the fish and the elements, the outdoors... the total exhaustion at the end of your fishing day,... the cooler full of fish to bring home... Yeah, I'm going to miss bank fishing!

Curious, why do think larger line causes problems? I usually go with 14lbs mono, so as not to break off on doubles (plus I like ot overengineer).
great posts by the way!!

Today i used your technique and a # 4 Mepps to catch a limit of hybrids and 40 whites on Lake Belton. Thanks again for sharing. Your technique has become a staple for my recent fishing. I have the confidence to say "If I can find them, I can catch them."

Great! You are an example of why I wrote the article and shared this technique. Thanks for sharing your success with me and all TFFers!

Great information Dennis. Thanks. With this and your map I'm hoping to have better luck this year.
