Good question!
Two lists -- The Obvious Ten (aka the "Duh" list) and The Distinctive Ten (what the better shops would carry)
The Obvious Ten:
1. Fly rods 2. Fly reels 3. Fly lines 4. Backing 5. Leaders 6. Tippet material 7. Flies 8. Boots 9. Waders 10. Vests or packs
The Distinctive Ten:
1. Local maps or books on fly fishing hot spots 2. Locally tied and focused flies 3. Similar lists/maps and flies for adventure travel (e.g., Alaska) 4. Instructional videos or DVDs 5. Full range of tying materials and equipment 6. Hatch charts or similar guides to seasonal fishing 7. Safety gear (sun screen, inflatable vests, wading staffs, buffs, gloves) 8. Fly fishing oriented recreational reading or viewing (books and DVDs) 9. Expert advice dispensed in a non-patronizing way 10. Staff who emanate the enjoyment of fly fishing and are willing to share their knowledge and enthusiasm.
Just my thoughts on the topic. Yours? I would add: 1:Drift boat rentals with drop off and pick up. 2:A list of guides who go above and beyond. 3:Rod rentals so you can try out that rod you have always wanted but were not sure if it's worth the price they want for it. 4:Nice selection of polarized shades from $-$$$ 5:Unparalled customer service

Mickfly+00dryfly add on enough said read up topic closed. The emphasis on regional patterns is a must. Take backwoods in fortworth for instance sure most people that go there are looking for sofa pillows, golden stones, and green drakes. They also need to be prepared for the local warm water guy looking for sandies, lmb, and, gills. Very well put.

1:Drift boat rentals with drop off and pick up.
Not sure if I would agree that "every" fly shop should have drift boats available for rent. I think drift boats are too regionally specific of an item for every shop to have them. For example, I don't think it would make sense for either of the fly shops up at Beaver's Bend to rent drift boats. The LMF is just not a drift boat appropriate river.

Same goes for the Guadalupe. It works for drift boats with flows about 250 cfs or so, but that hasn't happened in awhile. Rafts are used there.
Frankly, given the urban or suburban locations of many of today's fly shops, especially here in Texas, having any kind of watercraft for rent is a highly speculative and capital-intensive process. I doubt that most local shops would find them worth the risk.

The shop in my location has special events every weekend they can. Tying demos, casting demos, home water clean ups, tournaments, how to fish each river, fly selection, the list goes on and they are all free. Those are the things that I like

Good point. Events take time and effort to plan, but a great fly shop will plan and support them. That's what makes Living Waters an exemplary shop. I keep trying to get them to open a North Texas branch. We need that kind of active, informed, involved shop in our area.
