I've talked with a few guys that actually use jigs for the weight in order to have the additional lure out. I know the idea is to keep the bait in the strike zone, but this would seem to make sense given the fish are sometimes more apt to strike on the bottom.

I only use baitcasters and most often am using a crankbait of some sort to try and find active fish. As others have said, a good reel that's dialed in correctly and a medium action rod helped me a lot. I also use line in the 12-15 lb range, but I don't know if that's much of a factor. That's just what I've gotten comfortable with.

Here's my take on the DS rig. I fish them in clear waters and/or highly pressured waters. I fish them on M - ML spinning rods (6'6" - 7'6") that are between moderate to moderately fast action. Most of the time I'm trying to hold the line as still as I can and give it no action. That gives it that quiver that can turn neutral fish into biters. The moderate action of the rod can keep the weight, and worm, in the same place and still give the plastic tons of action. I go as heavy as I need to, instead of going as light as I can with most other techniques. I wanna get that rig to the bottom and have it stay there. I've targeted bass, crappie and sunfish with this rig, but have caught tons of other species. When the bite goes south on everything else, it's the closest thing to fishing bait.

I rarely use a drop shot as I like many other presentations over it but for the baitcaster I throw all my wacky rigs and shaky heads on a medium baitcaster with 10lb fluoro with no trouble at all.

A bit off-topic but the A-rig seems to be effective although I don't see it in my future. wink

To help with hang ups you can Texas rig your bait by threading it on your hook and just push the nose up close to the line, also the shape of the weight can also make a difference.

Dont be afraid to go with bigger hooks and baits.

Somedays it also works to make short cast and very slow drag with lots of pauses, make your leader a little bit longer for casting. I like this when the fish are spooky as it gets it out away from the boat, sometimes this will make a difference.

A lot of strikes will come on the first drop or just after it stops so be ready.

Lots of good sharing going on!

Also I think N2bassfishing uses a Buzz Bait on his dropshot set up! rolfmao

When I was catching bass using a speed craw on the dropshot I would let it fall to the bottom, slack my line up a lil bit, and then rip it upwards. 9 times out of 10 the bass were hitting it when I ripped it up. I think I caught about 15 bass that day using that technique. Sure was fun!

Just goes to show that multiple presentations can work with this setup. Its up to you to decide what the fish want and how they want it.

Man just play around with the set up. You can use a 6-12" leader bwtn the weight and the hook. As far as rigging the worm, you can wacky rig it, Texas rig, or nose hook it. I agree with Gonzales on the weight thing...less is better! I'll usually use braid to fluorocarbon leader and not use a swivel. It's not one of my favorite ways to catch fish but will bust it out when things get tough.

I went out the Clear Lake in California back in 2007 and took a guide out and asked him to show me how to rig it, fish it and what baits to use. Roboworm and Paul Krew custom baits are my top choices.

As far a not being able to cast it out and drag it back is not very accurate information. I'll drag it like a jig or a Texas rig in shallow water and drop it over the side in deeper water. Use your electronics in deeper water and it will be as easy as seeing the structure as if you were on the shore.

Good luck and see you out on Thursday night soon!

+1^ Solid advice right there. Gotta agree on the roboworms too. They jsut seem extra deadly on dropshot. Ive also had good luck with the Owner brand shakey worms as well.

That is ridiculous if it's true...

That guy doesn't need to use the A rig, he probably catches more LMB on GV than anyone.
