Wow. OK, I knew it would be hot (but a dry heat is pretty bearable). The wind, though, might be a bit much.

The wind usually lays down after about 60 days over 100 degrees.

JonEO.. I just moved to the DFW area from Georgia.. and the wind is the most drastic difference that I have seen. The comment about 20mph being calm is just about right.. at least since January. I haven't had a chance to get on the water yet, but I have been meaning to ask how guys deal with the wind here. Most of the lakes I have looked at either by Google Earth or maps are wide open water lakes.. there has to be some serious white caps out there.. does everybody beat the bank on the up wind side?

Um let me ask have you been to big springs area?
If you don't like wind, dust, sand storms, raining mud,big storms, sun, hot, cold, wind and wind might need think about that move.
O I can't forget snakes and tumbleweeds don't hit them with a vehicle they do a number on paint job trust me I know.
But on plus side there much flatter spots in west Texas thumb

The people of west Texas are some of the best you well ever meet there a lot to hate but not the people.

Thanks so much to everyone who responded to my question! I've never been in the Big Spring, TX area, but my girlfriend visited there -- um -- a LOT of years ago. She was impressed with the dry heat + cold nights. At that time, people with good ventilation didn't even need air conditioning. They would close windows and drapes all day, and open them up at night. She thought that was wonderful -- but she didn't remember anything about wind. Maybe because she's originally from SD, where wind at 20mph is a "calm" day, and it only gets less calm from there!

She must have been there in the winter. smile

In the summer, it will rarely get below 80 at night, and if you don't have air conditioning in the day, the heat is likely to kill you between April and October, it is not a pleasant climate. Don't underestimate the summers there. And the wind NEVER stops in West Texas. Look at an almanac from last year and see what people mean about extreme weather and temps.

One thing to remember is that part of the country isn't really Texas. We adopted that wasteland and allowed them to use the Texas name to protect the population from bandits. But later we found that not even the bandits would go there. Now we count on imports from the north to keep the population high enough to justify mail service out there.
welcome

Welcome to Texas !!

If you want to move to Texas I would look somewhere else besides Big Spring. In fact anywhere but Big Spring. The best fishing is in the metroplex or east Texas. I live in West Texas and I drive 300 miles one way for a good fishing trip. Lake OH Ivie is not too far from Big Spring but it is very low right now.
