If you guys who don't believe in the degradation of mono being as fast as it is, just do a google search on Monofilament Shelf Life and Fluorocarbon Shelf life. There have been several studies over the years that support what I typed above, in my initial response to this question.

I can't quote statistics, but I can tell you this. I fished my first tournament this past weekend...and guess what I was doing Thursday night. You guessed it, re-spooling with fresh line. Fun fishing, not worried about it to much unless I know the line to be old and in need of refreshing, but for a tournament, you better believe I want every advantage I can get and want fresh line.

I used KVD line conditioner several times and let most of the spool out several times, although it wasn't tied to something. I kept getting loose line in my spool no matter how much I peeled off. For a few bucks the line is going in the trash before I waste that much time on my next trip.

Reel Magic can help with older mono as well. I went fishing yesterday and had last years mono on since I hadn't fished this year and the trip was planned last minute. I sprayed on some RM the night before and it casted great the next morning. But as I was unhooking a fish, the reel dipped into the water and from then on out I dealt with the old mono backlashing because of the memory. And I've dipped my reels in the water while fishing before and never had casting issues.
