great topic and I am dang curious myself. Have been told mercury's black bottle oil is the exact same thing as quicksilver just a little pricier bc of the looks of the bottle.

I would also like to piggyback with this question....when making the switch to/from synthetic, is it ok to mix the two in the process?

Just my 2 cents. I have worked in the oil industry for 15 years a manufacture can not require you to use there oil. As long as the oil you use meet the industry standards they can not void your warrenty based on brand. All major brands will meet standards. The really cheap brands will meet them on average 90% of the time. If you ever have a warrenty claim denied becuse of this please contact the FTC.

have ran pennzoil full synthetic in my previous johnson 175 (82 yr model) and now in my 96 monty racing 175 fast strike, not a problem at all in either. I do premix since I don't trust oil injectors and don't need a blown engine due to a failure.

I have a 79 Merc 175, have had it several yrs. I've used Quick Silver Premium Plus, with Evin/Johnson 2+4 conditioner from the get go. No problems with her. It's a 79 ProCraft Fish / Ski.

She not much of a looker, loves to be turned on, and smells like fish.

+1 The VWaz is only getting yamalube, a lot of dealers have bulk now if you keep you jugs, it saves a little!

I have run the Citgo from academy in my last two motors exclusively and had ZERO issues. 2010 250 Pro XS Merc, and 2009 250 HPDI. The citgo is about the cheapest I can find, ever once in a while i'll give her the good stuff, Pro Tech from WalMart, lol

I use DFI in my Optimax just like the manual reccomends. I think it would be less than good judgement to spend $15000 on a motor and then try ta save a few bucks buying cheap oil.
