If you read the history of caddo, it was created by a log jam originally. So technically it is man made also. What are the winning lotto numbers for next week?....since you seem to know everything. Just send them to me in a PM...I don't want to have to share my winnings with all these "idiots"....

I think Tim hit that one on the head. White perch are white crappie. Either way, they eat good.

Why have I never heard of a "black perch"? Edit: maybe b/c regions that call white crappie "white perch" don't have any black crappie to call "black perch"?

Specs? Did you say specs? Man, I love catching specs in the Texas bay! Now is a good time to catch them too.
I fished with my newest bud Leon on Saturday and we had a communication hiccup about bass. I said bass meaning largemouth black bass and he said bass meaning white bass.
There are colloquial terms for everything, including crappie, and phrases that vary from region to region. Like someone else said, all those paper mouths eat good!

I am confused also ....Caddo lake according to what I read on the 2 versions of how it was formed .... because they apparently don't know for sure ..... one was an earthquake one was a bunch of fallen trees ..... nothing indicated to me it had anything to do with mankind ? not that this has anything to do with the original post .... I have heard people call them white perch before off east of texas... and I have heard them called a few other things as well... they get called a lot of really ugly names when they get off right beside the boat ya know ....LOL

On Lake Palestine , in my experience , all 2lb crappie and above are white crappie.
Must have something to do with habitat.
I had never heard them called anything but crappie before I moved to ET.

In south Louisiana we grew up calling them "sac-a lait". Took me a long time to get used to calling them crappie. Get the same blank stares when I go into the store and ask for "shiners". You know, the shiny little fish ya catch sac-a-lait wit. how bout some cockaho minnows?? +1

If you read the history of caddo, it was created by a log jam originally. So technically it is man made also. A natural logjam.

From Dunn's fish farms:
There are two types of crappie that are most common, the Black Crappie and the White Crappie. The Whites are much more prolific than the Black. White Crappie in most cases, take over smaller ponds and lakes. White Crappie should never be stocked in impoundments less than 100 acres. Black Crappie can be stocked in ponds as small as 1 acre without any concern of overpopulation. Since they don't propagate to the extent that the White Crappie do, you will find the average Black Crappie will grow faster and get larger than the average White Crappie.
The Black Crappie is a fish that offers an excellent sporting quality, and are even more enjoyable on the table than they are in the pond. These fish will not feed on a commercial feed, but with a good supply of Fathead Minnows and Hybrid Bluegill they will grow at a rate of 1/4 to 1/2 pound per growing season. A large Black Crappie is by far the most attractive sport fish you can have in your pond. When properly managed, this fish will add color to your pond or lake not found in most waters.
