If you look at the nice display Evan gave, 'california' is really different from manufacturer to manufacturer. Am I over thinking this?

Yes you are over thinking this. When I use a peanut butter n jelly jig I use a green pumpkin/purple craw. The craw now adds another color to the jig but the purple glitter in the craw accents the purple in the jig skirt.
You can also do a total contrast like a black/blue jig with a green pumpkin craw, or black jig with a white or chartruce trailer. Sometimes I will also match the craw as closely to the jig as I can like a black/blue jig with a blue bruiser trailer. All of these combos work.

Well my meaning was that you don't have to match the trailer as close to the color of the jig as possible. Many combos work.
